Man leaves shocking gift that funds co-op trout nursery in Pennsylvania

Scott Adams was working at his Berks County sign shop when he got a flabbergasting phone call.
For the past 20 years, Adams has managed a cooperative trout nursery for the Mill Creek Rod and Gun Club in Lebanon County, Pa., which partners with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission to raise and stock 8,000 fish a year in Mill Creek.
“An attorney on the other end of the line asked if I’d known someone named Robert B. Bellman,” recalls Adams, 62. “I said I did and she proceeded to tell me that he’d left our club a very substantial gift.”

Cases of EHD rising in Ohio deer as dry conditions persist

EHD, epizootic hemorrhagic disease, is an often-fatal affliction that can claim many deer when present locally, especially in northern latitudes that do not have annual outbreaks.
Due to chronic exposure to the disease, more deer in the south have acquired immunity to it with northern herds remaining more vulnerable. This year, with much of Ohio under drought conditions of various degrees, conditions have become favorable for the proliferation of the species of biting midges that carry the disease.

Fall turkey hunting: Overlooked by many, but often just as exciting as spring

Fall turkey hunting doesn’t draw the kind of attention as does the spring gobbler season, but that’s understandable.
After all, fall turkey hunting seasons usually overlap with deer season and small game seasons in most states, and whitetail hunting and grouse or waterfowl hunting always seems to trump other activities, certainly for the majority of sportsmen and women. That’s too bad, because fall turkey hunting can be every bit as exciting as the spring season when a thunderous gobble rattles the hardwoods.

A quick chat with Scott Hed, a man front and center in battle over Alaska’s Bristol Bay

Some of North America’s most effective conservation advocates rarely see their name quoted in the pages of Outdoor News. They’re the men and women who criss-cross the continent, appealing to donors, pitching their mission to sporting clubs, or requesting 90 seconds of a key politician’s time.
They eschew the limelight while quietly plugging away on their laptops in the dark corner of an airport while awaiting a red-eye, or negotiating an endorsement via cell phone while catching an Uber ride. Hailing originally from a small town in southern Minnesota, Scott Hed is one of those people, and he might be the most effective conservation advocate you’ve never heard of.

Blood-trailing tricks: How to find a deer when the tracking gets tough

The archery deer-hunting season is here in many states and coming soon in others. While every bowhunter in the woods is hoping for a short blood trail, that won’t be the case for everyone. Perfect shots are always the goal, but they aren’t always the outcome.
While there are ways to hedge your bets on a successful tracking job, like giving your deer enough time to expire on marginal hits, it’s also true that some blood trails are just tough to suss out. This isn’t easy, but there are a few tricks that can help you when tracking gets tough.

Glenn Sapir: Formula for longevity of oldest sporting club in the country could serve as a blueprint

On Sept. 28, outdoor enthusiasts will be observing National Hunting and Fishing Day, when anglers and hunters celebrate their heritage and the contributions they have made to wildlife, habitat and recreational opportunities as individuals and as organized sportsmen and women.
One organization in New York certainly has made its mark on that history as being the oldest continuously operating club in the United States.
