What’s the impact of youth hunting seasons in Minnesota, Wisconsin?

Brothers Hunter and Wyatt Krebs, of Alexandria, Minn., are crazy about duck hunting.
Their father, Dean Krebs, set them on that path as an avid hunter himself who has introduced them to hunting for big game, pheasants, and waterfowl.
At 16 years old, the Krebs brothers like it all, but there’s something about those whistling wings during a morning on the slough that has fully grasped their attention.
“They are fanatics,” Dean said. “They’re scouting today (on July 18). They (are addicted to the point where they will) walk a mile into a (wildlife management area) to see how the broods are coming.”

Ryan Rothstein: Tips to make this your best deer-hunting season

I wish I knew where the year 2024 has gone up until now, but just like that, another deer season is barreling right at us in Minnesota.
The excitement is palpable by now, and leaves are already hinting at their fall colors. Before we know it, we’ll be in the thick of the whitetail rut and daydreaming about giant bucks bird-dogging does. But there’s a lot of season between now and then.

Saugeye minimums poised to come off the books in Ohio

If the Ohio Wildlife Council votes approval, there will no longer be a minimum length limit for keeper saugeyes on a long list of lakes throughout the state.
The council will consider the measure to remove the 15-inch minimum on saugeye, sauger, and walleye at its regular meeting on Oct. 30. The lakes on the list include Acton Lake, Alum Creek Lake, Atwood Lake, Buckeye Lake, Caesar Creek Lake, Ferguson Reservoir, Findlay Reservoir 1, Findlay Reservoir 2, Indian Lake, Metzger Reservoir, Piedmont Lake, Pleasant Hill Lake, Rocky Fork Lake, Seneca Lake, and Tappan Lake.

Jeremy Smith: September can be a time to score big on muskies

Muskies are a challenge – arguably the hardest fish to catch in freshwater. You can spend hours or even days with nothing to show for your effort and then, suddenly it happens. The challenges of catching them are both physical and mental. And that’s what makes catching one so rewarding.
The month of September is a time of transition from summer to fall, and it can be an outstanding time to score big.

Oak Duke: Make your own signpost rub for whitetail hunting

Few marks in the deer woods trip a hunter’s trigger like a smokin’ hot buck rub. White scars in the woods.
But in the last few years, one particular type of buck rub has become my key big buck sign. No real mystery here…it’s the signpost rub. I just wish that I had focused on signpost rubs sooner in my deer-hunting career, both bow and gun.

Multiple hunting tactics are key to bear hunting in the Great Lakes region

When it comes to hunting bears successfully in the Great Lakes states, it would make sense for bear hunters to play the bulk of their chips in their home state – if it has a season – and then get ready to travel, even if that means hunting the late season in another state.
Alas, bear hunters who live in Illinois and Ohio have no option other than travel, since neither state offers a season. The good news? They don’t have to travel too far, since Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania do have bear seasons and also offer tags to nonresidents, mostly through a draw system that can require preference points to earn a tag. Since that process varies by state, hunters will have to do some homework first.

Jeremiah Haas: Best all-around fishing of the year is coming soon

Summer heat is nearly over and with that, some of the best fishing of the year is about to begin. Nearly every species of fish is susceptible to the strong urges to aggressively feed as water temperatures begin to fall.
For fishermen, this is a great time to hit the river and enjoy some of the best fishing you can experience. Bass, walleye, panfish, and catfish all will be putting on that feedbag up until winter, when species like sauger and sturgeon become easier to catch. So, if you have limited time, scheduling some fishing time now.
