Northern Minnesota brothers, father charged in poaching of multiple whitetails and a wolf, killing neighbors’ dog

A northern Minnesota man has been charged with multiple offenses, including felony counts, for allegedly poaching several deer over a number of years, transporting/possessing an illegally taken bear, and shooting and killing his neighbors’ German shepherd.
His father and two brothers also have been charged with related wildlife-related offenses following a DNR Enforcement Division investigation.

Minnesota DNR takes a cautious approach to 2024 deer hunting

For the 2024 Minnesota deer-hunting season, the DNR has opted to not increase harvest limits in any deer permit areas as it looks to bolster deer populations in the near future.
“I think this is the first time we haven’t had an increase in a DPA in quite some time. So basically, the moral of the story is that we’re still being pretty conservative,” said Todd Froberg, the DNR’s big-game program coordinator.

Ralph Loos: Feds try encouraging non-lead hunting with economic incentives

No Illinois wildlife refuge was selected for a pilot program that will basically pay hunters who choose not to use lead ammunition on federal sites. And, in an unrelated move, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it is planning to decrease the acreage open for hunting at a refuge in the state that is quite popular with hunters.

As expected, the USFWS in late July confirmed it is implementing a program at seven National Wildlife Refuges this fall “to test voluntary, incentive-based efforts to increase the use of lead-free ammunition by hunters on USFWS lands.”
When whispers of the program began to swirl last year, there was thought that the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge might be part of the test.

Follow these three patterns to catch August muskies

Catching muskies in August can be difficult. Years ago anglers believed their lack of action was a result of the fish losing their teeth. We now know muskies carry a full set of dentures all season long, but they do remain a challenge to catch.
Fortunately, there are a number of patterns that can produce muskies in late summer. Here are three that should figure into your muskie plans.

Oak Duke: What do we really know about the mysterious alpha white-tailed buck?

Over the last 50 years, great changes in technology have colored and shaded whitetail hunting. But despite these advances and regressions, our understanding of the alpha buck has only inched forward.
He’s still a mystery!
Most wild alphas are secretive whether in the low, flat country of Mississippi to the rugged hills and mountains of New York. Wild, and I emphasize wild, older bucks are extremely difficult to study. Topping the list of difficulties would be their inherent shyness, intelligence, incredible senses, and breadth of range.
