Steve Carney: Another story of stupidity, and plenty of suspended baitfish

When I look back at 45 years of guiding anglers, I have done some really dumb things. But recently, there was a notable addition to the list.
For background: In the past, I’ve dropped my boat off a roller trailer onto a cement ramp. And I’ve had a couple of boat fires. And I’ve had a trailer separate from my ball hitch on a major highway while I traveled at 70 mph. There have been countless other snafus that I will not divulge. But this recent one rates right up there.

Input sought on proposed special fishing regulations in Minnesota

The Minnesota DNR is asking for input on several special fishing regulation proposals.
Each year, the DNR reviews existing fishing regulations and proposes new special regulations that apply to individual waters and asks the public for input about the proposals. All new special regulations are reviewed on a regular basis to evaluate effectiveness.

Minnesota early teal hunters to see restrictions on Leech Lake, White Earth reservations

As the Aug. 15 wild rice season opening date approaches, the Minnesota DNR reminds harvesters that rice stands must be ripe before they can be legally harvested.
The DNR also reminds hunters that because wild rice is ripening at the same time as Minnesota’s early waterfowl hunting seasons, over-water waterfowl hunters are urged to be aware of and cautious about wild ricers.

Feds pitch plan to pay hunters for lead-free hunting

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in late July announced it is unfurling a pilot program at seven national wildlife refuges to test voluntary rebates to increase the use of lead-free ammunition by hunters on USFWS-administered lands this fall.

CDC clarifies its recent ‘dog import’ guidelines, but it’s not good enough, says one hunter advocacy group

After a backlash from sporting groups and various lawmakers, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its canine travel importation guidelines affecting U.S. hunters with dogs returning from Canada.
The new guidelines – which still violate two existing federal acts, according to one national sportsmen’s group threatening litigation – went into effect Aug. 1 and are “much clearer and simpler” than those previously handed down by the CDC in June, according to Ducks Unlimited.
