Adopting Pine Island Wildlife Management Area on Lake Vermilion was a move that made sense for Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters. Due to the WMA’s proximity to its namesake and the organization’s mission to support conservation in the region, leaders of the hunting and fishing group considered it a great opportunity.
“We’re really excited to kind of dip our toes into this new arena, and hopefully kind of hit northeast Minnesota from two fronts,” said Matthew Schultz, SFBW development and policy coordinator.

After studying fishers in northern Minnesota for several years in the early 2000s, it was a surprise to DNR Research Scientist John Erb that he and his team observed them migrating south around a decade ago.
“I never really predicted the day that fishers would interact with opossums,” Erb said.
Upon further review, knowing fishers’ geographic footprint historically sprawled across the state, it seems obvious to him now that the species could once again reside outside the state’s northern forested zone. Because the dense, conifer-forested areas – where fishers reside in northern Minnesota – aren’t as robust in the south, it raised questions for scientists and ecologists.

It surprised me when I began researching poison ivy that it is an amazing plant with a rather extensive – and impressive – taxonomical dossier.
Yet it is the plant’s sinister side that gets all of the ink, and rightfully so. The fluid secreted by the plant’s “leaves of three, leave it be” pattern is a remarkable product. However, so toxic is the clear sap that it sends an estimated 350,000 Americans at any one time seeking relief from the almost always unavoidable burning itch the secretion offers.

I don’t know about you, but as the buyer of a host of hunting and fishing licenses and stamps each year, I tend to sleep easier knowing that the money I spend, which in turn is spent by the Minnesota DNR, is being properly routed.
In other words, spent for its intended purposes. Thus it’s good to know, too, that for the past 30 years, there’s been a group of citizens to oversee that spending – those dollars that flow from the DNR’s Game and Fish Fund – as best they can. That group of citizens – for at least a few more months – comprise the Fisheries Oversight and the Wildlife Oversight committees.

Among the deer regulation changes considered and acted upon by the Michigan Natural Resources Commission a few weeks ago, I don’t like the change in September (Liberty – for youths and hunters with disabilities) and October (Independence – for disabled veterans and other hunters with disabilities) special hunts.
In a professed effort to boost the harvest of antlerless deer, both hunts will become antlerless-only beginning next year. The July slate of proposals reflected, in large part, the wide range of issues and potential solutions surrounding the Michigan white-tailed deer. The big issues, though, boil down to two, at least in the Lower Peninsula: too many deer on the landscape, and a shrinking number of hunters to harvest them into balance.
