Ron Steffe: With age comes a different experience in anticipation of opening days

Aging sure eases the stirring and sleeplessness that are part of hunting and fishing seasons’ beginnings.
Just yesterday, I started packing (at least piling in the garage) everything I’ll need when I head to camp this coming Friday for Tioga County, Pa., for my annual week of spring gobbler hunting the canyon area and trout fishing at some of the stocked streams near camp.

Ohio’s Lake Metroparks undertaking herculean effort in building new Fairport park

Paul Palagyi casually swung his left hand toward the distant Fairport Harbor breakwater and adjacent iconic Grand River-West breakwater lighthouse: All maybe two-plus miles away.
Yet in a very real sense Palagyi’s vision extended far beyond that collective waypoint. Not in any actual physical distance but in the mental framing of time. Palagyi stood at the renovated Painesville Township Park in Ohio, an eastern Lake County multi-function site managed by Lake Metroparks, which the always enthusiastic-for-the-cause parks system’s executive director heads up.

Lake Michigan stocking effort aims to restore Chinook salmon

Improving Lake Michigan’s Chinook fishery was the goal of volunteers who showed up at Indiana’s East Chicago Marina to release three- and-a-half-inch-long salmon into pens built for the young fish.
Until the middle of this month, the Lake County (Indiana) Fish and Game Protection Association will feed the salmon three times daily, with a goal of getting the salmon to imprint on the East Chicago Marina so they swim back there when it’s time to spawn three years from now, giving fishermen the chance to catch adult salmon from shore.

So, you want to kill a spring gobbler? Here’s what you need to know as a beginner

If there’s one common trait I hear from new or would-be turkey hunters, it is that they know little about it and are often unsure where to begin the learning process. If you fit this description, know that you are not alone. Turkey hunters are not born, they are made, and we all have to start somewhere.
I believe that becoming a successful turkey hunter requires three things: the right hunting spot, knowledge of your quarry, and the ability to use turkey calls to coax them into gun range.

Tom Bahti: Examining high deer numbers on a farm in Wisconsin’s Waupaca County

Since the late 1970s I’ve been extremely fortunate to have deer hunting access to the Hill farm in northeast Waupaca County. The farm was owned by Allie and Lulabelle Hill. Lulabelle was a childhood friend of my grandmother’s in Shawano back in the first decade of the 1900s.

Minnesota DNR drops elk tags to 10 for 2024

Elk-hunting season has gained popularity among Minnesota hunters. The process for launching the 2024 Minnesota DNR elk season will begin next month, with hunters applying via lottery for a chance to receive a once-in-a-lifetime tag.
But fewer hunters will have that opportunity this fall. The number of licenses available has decreased from 17 in 2023 to 10 in 2024 for Minnesota hunters. The reduction is due in part to several factors, including elk herd size, the inability to conduct elk surveys during winter, and the state DNR’s collaboration with Red Lake Nation on tribal elk hunts.
