State Roundup: Great news for Wisconsin’s lake sturgeon

Great news on the sturgeon front early last week when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced more than two months ahead of the June 30 deadline that the agency will not be listing the nation’s lake sturgeon – or even distinct populations within a state or states – as federally endangered.
This should have been an easy call considering all the work and progress states have been making on the lake sturgeon front over the years as they’ve worked across borders to bolster sturgeon populations.

Dean Bortz: Wisconsin’s Bayfield County deer issues same as other northern counties

Attending the Bayfield County Deer Advisory Committee meeting in Washburn, Wis., on the night of April 23 made me wonder why we have not yet gone back to using the former “numbered units” that were employed prior to the arrival of Dr. James Kroll from Texas and his Deer Trustee Report.
We’re 10 years into that experiment now and I think it’s safe to say that some parts of his plan are not working. We can keep the CDAC and DMAP (Deer Management Assistance Program), but – at least in northern Wisconsin – we have to get off these county units.

Wisconsin tribes’ spearing total eclipses 35k walleyes from north region

Preliminary harvest data for Wisconsin’s six Chippewa tribes show that 35,203 walleye have been speared so far across the ceded territory in Wisconsin.
A relatively slow start to the season weeks ago saw a significant uptick in activity the last two weeks with nearly half of the more than 35,000 fish harvested across 14 days.
