Green Bay produces giant 56-inch muskie for Wisconsin angler fishing for walleyes

A Northwoods angler headed to Peshtigo for Green Bay’s spring-run walleyes instead latched onto a fish he didn’t expect to catch – a 56-inch muskie that bottomed out a fellow angler’s 60-pound scale.
When Ashland, Wis., resident and retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Mark Mackey’s brother called inviting him to come over to the Peshtigo River for some walleye fishing, he didn’t hesitate.
“Bob (Mackey) said, ‘Now’s the time, brother.’ He’s been telling me about the 30-plus inch walleyes he’s been catching for a few years now and sent a few pictures my way too, so it didn’t take much to convince me to make the trip,” Mark Mackey said.

Warm water, temps to welcome Wisconsin anglers for 2024 fishing opener

Open-water conditions all around Wisconsin are looking a little different from a year ago at this time.
Thousands of anglers across the Badger State look to begin their 2024 hook-and-line fishing opener on lakes, rivers, and streams on Saturday, May 4, following one of the mildest winters on record across the entire Midwest. The mild winter filtered right into spring, and though a brief cool down emerged recently there is no remaining ice atop water within any of the 72 counties – a welcome change for many, but especially those interested in fishing the northern tier of counties from Dairyland to Niagara.

If you’re fishing one of Minnesota’s ‘Great Eight’ walleye-fishing destinations this spring, here’s what to know

On Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River, from May 11 to Feb. 28, 2025, the bag is six fish, and no more than four may be walleyes; walleyes 19.5 to 28 inches must be immediately released, with only one walleye over 28 inches allowed.

Mississippi River’s Pool 2 in Minnesota: A “phenomenal fishery” in an urban setting

You never know what you’re going to encounter on the mighty Mississippi River, especially as it meanders through Minnesota’s Twin Cities.
Consider Pool 2 – a 35-mile stretch from the Ford Dam in St. Paul downstream to Hastings. It can be, as some anglers say, a sensory experience. An occasionally bizarre and beautiful one, too.

It’s going to be an awesome Minnesota opener, just ask Mr. Walleye

Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Famer “Mr. Walleye,” Gary Roach, will turn 87 on Aug. 3. When you consider that his mother was probably on the water with a fishing rod in hand while carrying this fishing legend in her womb, he can probably brag that he has participated in every fishing opener in Minnesota for the past 88 years.
During a recent conversation, Roach and I discussed how this year’s early ice-out and a lack of ice-fishing pressure this past winter might affect walleye-angler success on opening day and for the first few weeks after that.

Versatility pays off as much as any trait in the turkey woods

Turkey hunting is supposed to be heart-pounding. Gobblers are supposed to march into your decoys and respond to your calling. But that doesn’t always happen. In fact, when dealing with long-shanked, old birds, it rarely, if ever happens.

Yeah, it would be nice if all birds played by those rules, but they don’t, so in order to be consistently successful at tagging turkeys, you sometimes have to break from the norm and get a bit spicy.
