Turkeys for Tomorrow group focuses on research-based approach to repopulating wild turkeys

Until recently, the restoration of the wild turkey across the U.S. in the late 20th century was considered one of the greatest success stories in American conservation.
But with turkey populations now declining from 30-60% in several states, new approaches, new ideas and even new organizations are rising up to reverse this trend. One group, Turkeys for Tomorrow – or TFT – is seeking to lead a research-based approach to repopulating the native bird at a time of flux in conservation circles.

Bite during Ohio’s walleye run fluctuating right now

With the mild winter Ohio is experiencing, there have been fishermen trying their luck for walleyes in the Sandusky and Maumee Rivers since early February. Although some fish were taken early in the low, clear rivers, the spawning runs do not truly develop until mid-March on either of these large Lake Erie tributaries.
Whenever the river temperatures rose, some fish present in both rivers were caught in modest numbers.

Pennsylvania bear mauling victim is recovering

A Butler County, Pa., woman feels lucky to be alive, having survived a mauling by a black bear on the deck of her Butler Township home March 5 in an encounter she calls “terrifying.”
Lee Ann Galante, 55, was attacked by a sow at around 8:30 p.m. soon after she let her 8-pound Pomeranian, Smokie, into the backyard for a break. It began with Smokie barking at a bird feeder at the side of the house and a “terrible commotion” that Galante presumed involved a deer.

Steve Pollick: Wildlife, wild plants and weather — it is all connected

You can know that spring is just around the corner without bothering a glance at a calendar, just by watching signs of change in nature.
Sure, the official beginning of spring, by astronomical calculations, is March 19 at 11:06 p.m., Eastern Time. That is when the sun crosses the “celestial equator,” an imaginary plane that extends into space from the Earth’s Equator. It is called the vernal or “green” Equinox – for roughly equal portions of night and day. But wildlife, fish, and wild plants have their own schedules.

Lake Minnetonka Crappie Contest in Minnesota not happening in 2024

An annual rite of spring will not be happening in 2024. Via its social media accounts last week, Minnesota Bound announced that it would not be holding the 2024 Lake Minnetonka Crappie Contest.
“Due to a variety of factors, we have decided to cancel this year’s event. Thank you to all who have participated over the years. Please continue to introduce a kid to the great outdoors and crappie fishing,” the post said.
