Wisconsin’s Tanner Peterson describes himself as an outdoorsman and fireman in the short bio on his Instagram account, and now he can add the distinction of being the only known person in the state to harvest a golden bowfin.
Peterson, 22, who hails from the town of Salem in far southeastern Wisconsin, was bowfishing with his older brother, Gunner, on the night of March 7 on a Racine County lake. At about 11 p.m., Tanner arrowed an incredibly rare 19-inch bowfin that was bright orange in color.
“That was actually our first night on the water this year, so it was a pretty crazy experience for the first night,” Tanner told Outdoor News.

The Iowa DNR issued a press release earlier this week, saying that on March 11, New Cooperative in Red Oak, Iowa, notified the DNR of a release on-site early Monday morning.
Approximately 1,500 tons of liquid nitrogen fertilizer (32% solution) discharged into a drainage ditch, then into the East Nishnabotna River. The release occurred due to a valve left open on an aboveground storage tank overnight.
Well, here we are, the middle of March, and there’s not a whole lot of things for me to do. Trout season in New York doesn’t open for another couple of weeks and it’s still a little too early to scout for spring turkeys. Even though hunting seasons are over there are still things I like to do. Walking in the early spring woods is one of them.

In spite of the nation’s annual quest for Punxsutawney Phil’s expertise, I’ve never been one to rely on a groundhog to tell me how much winter we have left. The position and gathering strength of the sun will tell you all you need to know – that we’re on the downside of winter, in spite of this usually being the coldest time of the year.

What is perhaps more rewarding than harvesting the buck of your dreams is seeing a close brother do the same.
Alex Gingerich, 19, found this out close-hand during the recently completed deer season when his 12-year-old brother, Glendon, did just that, on public land to boot.
Michigan’s 16,614-acre Barry State Game Area is set to expand by a little more than 200 acres thanks to a property donation that is expected to be accepted by Department of Natural Resources director M. Scott Bowen.
The property was formerly owned by the Boys and Girls Club of Kalamazoo and was purchased by a conservation-oriented family that works with the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, according to Mark Mills, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Division’s southwest regional manager.

Living in St. Cloud and fishing Minnesota’s sky-blue waters in the Land of 10,000 Lakes for walleyes, bass, and northern pike, Grant Anderson thought he had it better than most “God’s country,” Anderson, 61, said of Minnesota’s fishing waters.
But then he took a trip to Alaska in 1994. Then another for two weeks in 1996. Then yet another for a month in 1997. Most of his time was spent hiking, camping, and fishing for salmon.
