Deer hunter success slips over the past decade in Illinois

Illinois deer hunters have gone from average to below average when it comes to hunter success in the past 10 years.
This according to two different sources: the hunters themselves and the National Deer Association, which bases “success” on the percentage of hunters that harvest at least one deer each season.

Wisconsin DNR facing ‘red ink reality’ without a license fee hike

Not bankrupt, but not flush with cash either may best describe the budget situation for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
DNR officials explained to the Natural Resources Board (NRB), at its Jan. 24 meeting, that a “structural deficit” exists and will become a red-ink reality in 2026. Paul Neumann, DNR budget and policy supervisor, said the deficit is significant.

Turkeys, pheasants benefiting from mild Minnesota winter so far in 2024

The 2022-23 and 2023-24 winter seasons have been complete opposites, and it’s allowed a couple of game bird species to increase their population, explore new locations, and provide a positive outlook for upcoming hunting seasons.
Nate Huck, Minnesota DNR resident game bird specialist, said wild turkeys and pheasants likely are benefiting from the mild winter, but ruffed grouse could be impacted by little snow in the forests.

Mike Schoonveld: Deep thoughts about fishing with earthworms

I’m not a particularly deep thinker, and most of the time, like when I’m threading a worm on a hook, I’m not thinking much deeper than how deep I should dangle the worm.
Most fish like to eat worms. But why? The answer to that question takes some deep thinking.

Tom Venesky: Restrictions on Raystown Lake fishing tourneys in Pennsylvania don’t float

For a boater who likes to fly, Raystown Lake is a mecca within Pennsylvania. There are no speed or horsepower restrictions at the lake, so boaters on Raystown can throttle down and make some waves.
When it comes to competing in a fishing tournament on the lake, however, the federal government feels that’s one activity where restrictions are needed. And it really doesn’t make sense.

Longear sunfish are feisty fighters of late winter, early spring in Ohio

A longear sunfish is unlike any other. Glimmering fresh from the water, it seems too spectacular to be here, as if had been blown inland from the barrier reef of an exotic land. It is a real treat to see, if you get the chance.
There are two subspecies, the northern longear, Lepomis megalotis peltastes, and the central longear, Lepomis megalotis megalotis. The northern longear is the smaller of the two.
