Tips and tricks for mastering forward-facing sonar

Forward-facing sonar (FFS) can be a polarizing topic among anglers. Anglers who have embraced the new technology love it. Those who haven’t fear its potential negative effects on fish numbers.
In case you haven’t followed the latest craze in electronics, FFS is a transducer that mounts on the electric motor shaft or a standalone shaft. It sends information to a compatible sonar graph that displays fish swimming, suspended or near the bottom a great distance from the boat.

Ryan Rothstein: Take advantage of the many things a typical winter wouldn’t allow in the deer woods

If you’re the type that happens to enjoy winter, you’ll have to forgive me.
Whether your sled has been parked in the shed all winter or if your ice-fishing season has been a complete bust, I’m sorry, but I can’t give you my sympathies. The main reason is that a mild winter like this is just what the doctor ordered – both for the deer herd and for me.

Dan Ladd: From snowmobiles to hooks and bullets, all equal time well spent outdoors

Although I sort-of own a snowmobile, I wouldn’t consider myself a snowmobiler. But I used to be, sort-of.
One of the few luxuries my hard-working father ever afforded himself was a snowmobile. Looking back, it was a family investment as growing up, my siblings, cousins and I spent countless hours taking turns making loops on my dad and uncle’s snowmobiles around the very property where I make my home today.

Trumpeter swans triumphing in southern Illinois thanks to recovery efforts

The trumpeter swans continue to make a triumphant return to southern Illinois.
The latest DNR aerial survey showed the following numbers: 394 total swans counted, 139 at Burning Star Mine, 183 at Union County Refuge, 39 at Pyramid, 22 at Rend Lake, nine at Keck’s and two at Carlyle Lake. This doesn’t take into consideration the numbers of small groups ranging from four to as many as 20 or 30 that I have been finding scattered out across private small ponds and lakes.
