In-person fish and game hearings return April 8 in Wisconsin after being online-only in 2023

The traditional in-person spring fish and game hearings sponsored by the Conservation Congress and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will return the second Monday in April.
The Conservation Congress Leadership Council met Jan. 12-13 to hear updates from the DNR on fish and wildlife programs, and receive reports from county delegates who serve on 23 advisory committees.

Going light is key during ice-fishing seasons of inconsistent ice; here’s where to cut weight

Not that shaving a few pounds is an excuse to creep out on thin ice, but saving some weight keeps us nimble and after the fish, especially when hand-dragging our gear so late into what’s typically midwinter conditions.
Call it a first-ice mindset for what may be much more of the season than we intended. Here’s how I look to keep it light out there.

Michigan business, Bear’s Den Pizzeria, honors bowhunting legend, Fred Bear

Fans of legendary Michigan bowhunter “Papa” Fred Bear, who don’t already know, will be pleased to learn a Grayling, Mich., business honors the bowhunting pioneer by displaying some of the bows and arrows his company manufactured along with mounts and pictures of some of the big game Bear shot via stick and string.
Bear’s archery manufacturing business was located in Grayling from 1947 through 1978 and so was a museum, until manufacturing moved to Gainesville, Fla., where Bear Archery remains today.

Bob Gwizdz: Getting a taste of Michigan’s U.P. wolf conundrum

Over my years as a deer hunter I have fooled around with virtually every technique we’ve all heard about: sex attractant scents, rattling horns, drives, stalking, grunt calls. Heck, when I lived in Mississippi, I went on a number of hunts where we ran ’em with dogs.
But gradually I adopted a simple three-step approach to deer hunting: Find a place where you think you’ll see a deer, sit down, and stay there. It has worked for me reasonably well.

Is your food plot in need of improvement? Try frost seeding this spring

Did last fall find your clover plot a bit underwhelming? If “opportunities for improvement” topped last season’s food plot report card, frost seeding might help give your plot a boost this spring.
Frost seeding employs a phenomenon that occurs each spring when atmospheric conditions work on soil to generate the growth of strange crystals. To help you understand the process, let me set the stage with a scenario, one that you may have experienced.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Fracking deal a swing and a miss for Ohio

A seasonal batting average of .500 in baseball is unheard of with the best-ever being then-Cleveland Indian’s Nap Lajoie’s .426 in 1901. Even the best that Boston’s legendary Ted Williams could muster was .406 in 1941.
Thus, a .500 batting average would be a monumental thing in baseball. However, in the world of conservation, a .500 batting average is still a swing and a miss.
