Beyond New York: Angler in Maine drowns while checking ice thickness

A man who was checking the thickness of ice on a lake in the Maine wilderness crashed into the icy water and drowned, game wardens said.
Walter Demmons, 62 of Milford, was drilling holes with a friend to check the ice thickness while preparing to fish in Quakish Lake when they heard the ice crack, wardens said.

American Civil Liberties Union supporting NRA in SCOTUS free speech appeal

In a case of politics making strange bedfellows, the National Rifle Association will be represented by frequent nemesis the American Civil Liberties Union in an appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court.
The New York-based civil liberties group confirmed that it would provide legal representation for the gun-rights group in its First Amendment case against New York’s Department of Financial Services even as it “vigorously” opposes nearly everything it stands for.

New York Mixed Bag: Marine fishing license not likely to be included in 2024 budget

The revival of a saltwater license program in New York does not look likely for next year. Newsday recently reported that Gov. Kathy Hochul’s forthcoming budget won’t include the $10 marine fishing license that some sportsmen’s groups had been seeking, with others being opposed.

Ice-fishing woes continue in New York this winter as warming trend hinders ice formation

New York State’s ice fishermen and women were optimistic that the winter of 2023-24 was going to be different than recent winters when Mother Nature rewarded them with fishable ice in parts of upstate by early December.
Unfortunately, as has happened in many other recent winters, that hard-water was just a temporary covering, as warm temperatures and rain wiped out much of what had accumulated in the Adirondacks and adjacent parts of upstate.

Legal status of potential record buck from Ohio in question as investigation is launched

Wildlife officers from the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife are investigating a potential record deer taken during the archery hunting season in Clinton County, Ohio, according to a statement from the Division of Wildlife.
According to the Ohio Division of Wildlife, the deer was taken by Christopher J. Alexander, 28, of Wilmington, on Nov. 9, 2023. The Ohio DNR launched an investigation after information was provided from the public alleging that Alexander failed to obtain the lawfully required written permission prior to hunting on private property, according to the Division of Wildlife.
