Commentary: What would Teddy Roosevelt think about today’s hunters and anglers?

Theodore Roosevelt believed in the restorative benefits of hunting – as well as the importance of conserving wildlife for its own sake. His philosophy of conservation lived on through the actions of government, although opposed by many.
The opposition was primarily from commercial interests – some of the same commercial interests that abused workers and manipulated financial systems.

Agencies expect further decline in the number of Minnesota deer farms

The Minnesota DNR and state Board of Animal Health implemented several changes in cervidae farm management in 2023 after the state Legislature passed several new laws that altered oversight and regulations for certain farms.
Mike Oehler, DNR farmed deer and captive species coordinator, and Dr. Heather Damico, BAH senior veterinarian overseeing the farmed cervidae program, believe that changes from the 2023 legislative session will lead to fewer deer farms and farmed animals heading into 2024.

Poor ice not so nice for Minnesota’s fishing retailers

During a normal December, business is booming at Blue Ribbon Bait & Tackle in Oakdale.
“It’s typically our busiest time of year,” said Blue Ribbon owner, general manager, and fishing guide Josh Stevenson, who purchased the popular outdoor shop in 2004. “Kids are off for Christmas break. College students are home. A lot of people are taking vacation. Everyone goes a little a crazy indoors after a while, and they want to get out and many go ice fishing. Not this year. I’ve never seen business this slow. It’s completely unprecedented.”
Stevenson isn’t alone.

Lake of the Woods offers a little bit of everything for ice anglers

Early this winter, anglers across much of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan faced uncertain ice conditions on lakes that in most years offer solid footing and even drivable ice shortly after New Year’s Day.
That was not the case last winter on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods, where plowed roads, heated icehouses, and two well-provisioned on-the-ice taverns welcome anglers from near and far. A variety of fish species, too, are available in good numbers and sizes from toss-back to would-you-look-at-that-now!
