Silent treatment during Pennsylvania’s second week of gun season

This past Saturday afternoon, the final day of the Pennsylvania season for hunting deer with rifles, found me in a climbing-stand on a hillside watching a flat bottom for the appearance of deer.
It was a cloudy day, and when I parked my truck to head to the stand, the vehicle’s instrument panel read 48 degrees. A slight breeze moved from a southwest direction, meaning any deer I would see below would not be able to catch my scent.

Chasing early-season bluegills in clear water of West Lake Okoboji a challenge worth pursuing

For years, ice fishermen from across the Midwest have traveled to northwest Iowa’s West Lake Okoboji to sight fish the finicky bluegills for which West Okoboji is so famous. Late ice toward the end of February and into March can be incredible, and that’s what out-of-staters love.
I also find early season with a minimum of 4 inches of ice to be even better. This year, Mother Nature has been pretty stubborn and good safe ice is not yet a reality. Good, solid ice will come sooner or later. When it does, it’s going to be lights out. The bluegills have had no pressure for several weeks, and they will be ready biters!

Newly-published study examines deer behavior in the presence of wolves

A study recently published by a University of Minnesota research team shines new light on deer behavior, by comparing populations considered “savvy” and “naive” to wolf predation.
Dr. Ellen Candler, postdoctoral associate and lead author of the study, said it should be of interest to hunters in that it looks at how humans, their prey, and the predators they share it with all interact and affect each other.

Nation’s top waterfowl pros coming to Minnesota in February

Waterfowl professionals from the Mississippi Flyway Council will meet in February at Cragun’s Resort on Gull Lake in Brainerd – the first such annual multi-day winter informational gathering to be held in Minnesota.
“February is our informational meeting that will include several presentations and committee updates on a range of waterfowl issues,” said Steve Cordts, Minnesota DNR waterfowl staff specialist.
The event, which will take place Feb. 20-23, will likely have in attendance 50 to 60 waterfowl officials from across Mississippi Flyway.

Rediscovering New York’s Southern Zone an enjoyable way to extend the deer season

There was a time when I believed that all the deer in New York were in the Southern Zone. And any time I had the opportunity to hunt there, I would pounce on it. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to have a few places to go, courtesy of a few of my hunting partners, and have even taken a few deer from these spots.

Interested in buying hunting land? Here’s how to locate your dream of a game-rich paradise

Among the many benefits of being a hunter in the United States is the ability to find public land relatively close to home on which to target deer, ducks, grouse, pheasants, and other game and non-game species.
But for some people, owning their own piece of hunting property is the dream. It may not be a simple proposition – simplicity, of course, is relative when it comes to buying any type of property – but people who plan ahead and know exactly what they’re looking for stand the best chance for success.
