Childhood in goose blinds put Doug McClain on solid track for Illinois DNR waterfowl role

Sometimes, when determining your life’s trajectory and future career path, it’s not a matter of knowing what to do, it’s doing what you know. For new Illinois DNR Waterfowl Program Manager Doug McClain, nothing could be closer to the truth.
Despite initially intending to pursue a career in medicine, McClain cites a lifelong connection to waterfowl hunting, and a few well-timed job shadows as an undergraduate, for showing him that a career in what he knows – waterfowl – is entirely possible.

Find panfish to catch largemouth bass beneath the ice

Bass are some of our most popular game fish, but you wouldn’t know it once Minnesota lakes cap over with ice. Expensive bass boats are put into storage, and bass themselves are often almost as conspicuously absent.
More than likely, if you’ve caught largemouths, it’s been by accident, either on tip-ups intended for northern pike or on tiny bluegill jigs that seem too dainty for a bass’s oversized mouth. But largemouths can be caught through the ice, particularly early and late season.

Work basins adjacent to the popular structure to find less-pressured winter walleyes

I have often compared walleyes to white-tailed deer. Both species seem to love edges.
Walleye fishing traditionally also has been all about finding and understanding structure. When we look at fishing structure, however, think of structure as first-come, first-served. What can happen so often is that the first anglers on a specific piece of structure can do particularly well, then the spots seldom last longer than a week for what we would consider good fishing.

Under the right conditions, some of New York’s best deer hunting happens during late muzzleloading seasons

After waiting all season for it, the snow was finally coming down quite steadily on the very last day of the 2022 Northern Zone muzzleloading season. Four of us spent the morning and early afternoon making a few small drives in one of our main hunting areas, and eventually the rest of the guys were ready to call it a season.
But I had other plans.
