Minnesota DNR seeks help in wolf kill, duck-dump investigation

The Minnesota DNR is looking for help in finding the person or people responsible for a pair of central Minnesota poaching incidents discovered on Friday, Oct. 13.
Joe Albert, the agency’s Division of Enforcement communications coordinator, said the DNR believes the cases, which include a dead gray wolf and nearly two dozen ducks, involve two separate poaching incidents. One incident was a timber wolf shot and killed near Buckman in Morrison County, and the other incident was the dumping of over a dozen ducks nearby in Little Falls.

Biden signs bipartisan shooting education bill that protects funding for hunter ed, archery programs

President Joe Biden has signed the Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act, which protects funding for schools that provide hunter education, archery, shooting sports and other programs.
The Oct. 6 signature comes after both chambers of the U.S. Congress solidly passed the legislation that fixes language from the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 that potentially allowed the U.S. Department of Education to pull federal funding from schools that have hunter education, archery and other shooting sports programs.

Technological advances sweeping through the fishing industry aren’t for everyone

It’s been very interesting reading articles in Michigan Outdoor News and other publications regarding forward-facing or live sonar, a technology that detects fish that are in front of and around, not just under, your boat.
Those who follow tournament fishing, including the tournament anglers themselves, are wondering if expanded use of this new technology will put too much pressure on the resource. I’ve been wondering the same thing myself, and it’s good to see the concern.

Illinois’ youth deer hunters, archers reporting plenty of activity

Numbers from the first three weeks of archery season and the early October youth deer hunt have not been made available by DNR, but reports from hunters up and down the state indicate a solid start.
An uptick in the use of crossbows during the Oct. 7-9 youth hunt was noted. This year also was the first time the youth hunt allowed use of single-shot rifles. Some believe crossbow and rifles will put more hunters in treestands this season and boost the overall deer harvest. Last year’s harvest of 157,854 was up from the 146,438 taken in 2021-2022.

Hundreds aid in search for young girl found alive after being taken from New York state park

The search began as many have before it – a child hadn’t returned from a bike ride, an occurrence that usually ends quickly and successfully.
However, the 911 call that came in at 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 30 reporting a missing 9-year-old camper at Moreau Lake State Park in Saratoga County, N.Y., turned into anything but a routine search for a child who wandered off. The quaint, wooded park in the foothills of the Adirondacks became the site of one of the biggest missing person searches in recent New York history.
The search ended successfully miles away two days later when the child was found alive, stashed in a camper in central Saratoga County by a man who allegedly kidnapped her.

Otter Creek easement purchase in Iowa boosts trout stream access

Fishermen will have increased access to a popular trout stream in Iowa thanks to the purchase of an easement last Thursday by the Iowa Natural Resources Commission.
The commission voted unanimously to purchase an angler access conservation easement alongside Otter Creek, located near West Union in Fayette County. The creek flows through Echo Valley State Park before it joins the Turkey River near Elgin. It has been labeled the 24th most popular trout stream in the state. The easement will provide public access stretching 1.21 miles along the creek.

Have no dog? Here are ways to still get on the grouse

The most popular game bird in Minnesota, the ruffed grouse has been targeted by as many as 90,000 hunters during a recent season, and DNR spring drumming counts indicate that those who hit the woods this fall should, once again, be able to locate their share of grouse.
Because the grouse is a master at avoiding detection, most bird hunters are accompanied by a canine companion trained to find and follow a scent, point to or flush the bird, and bring the downed grouse to hand. But not everyone has a dependable teammate, and those who hunt without a four-legged partner must adopt different strategies to be successful.
