CWD positive deer found in Michigan’s Midland County for first time

A new positive case of chronic wasting disease in a Midland County deer over the summer is raising concerns about how the Department of Natural Resources is addressing the disease.
DNR officials collected the deer on June 20 after a Midland Township landowner reported the deer acting strangely, and confirmed the animal was positive for CWD on Aug. 4, DNR Deer Specialist Chad Stewart told Michigan Outdoor News. DNR officials did not produce a press release about the first known case in Midland County, but instead mentioned the case in a deer season preview and posted the positive find on the department’s CWD tracking map online.

Surviving loose minks released from Pennsylvania farm face grim future

The estimated hundreds of minks that are still on the loose in Pennsylvania face a grim future as cold weather approaches.
According to Mark Stahl, who operates the minks farm near Sunbury, Pa., 7,400 minks were set free inside the fenced perimeter of the facility. The fence was cut in two locations and hundreds of minks escaped from the farm, he said. About a week after the incident, Stahl said approximately 400 minks have died since being recovered outside of the farm.

Vandals release hundreds of minks from Northampton County farm in Pennsylvania

Hundreds of minks escaped from a Northampton County farm in mid-September in an apparent act of agricultural criminal mischief.
Someone is believed to have crept to Richard H. Stahl Sons fur farm in Rockefeller Township in the wee hours of Sept. 17 and cut holes in fencing, which allowed the animals to escape. Minks were appearing in residential yards and in cornfields, and many wound up as roadkill, according to Pennsylvania Game Commission education and information officer, Lt. Aaron Morrow.
“When I say they were everywhere, they were everywhere,” he said. “Because they had been captive minks, they didn’t know what to do.”

Maryland angler catches record Florida pompano

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has officially recognized Bobby Graves, of Salisbury, as the third official state record holder for the Florida pompano in the Chesapeake Division.
The warm water species was added to Maryland record books in 2019 after becoming more common in state waterways. Graves caught the record-breaking 6.44-pound fish in the Chesapeake Bay near Bloodsworth Island, Dorchester County, Sept 17. He caught this impressive pompano while fishing for spotted sea trout using a soft crab for bait.

New Maryland sheepshead record set in Chesapeake Bay

A Somerset County, Maryland, resident has officially been recognized by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for a new state fishing record in the Chesapeake Bay Division for sheepshead.
Brian Summerlin, of Princess Anne, caught the 16.6-pound fish Sept. 17 in Tangier Sound off Crisfield in about 15 feet of water. Summerlin was targeting sheepshead using a soft crab rigged on a sliding sinker “fish-finder rig” with an 8/0 circle hook, and a spinning rod with 60-pound braid and a 60-pound fluorocarbon leader.
