Pinchot State Forest in Pennsylvania is expanded near Scranton

More than 400 acres of forestland along Interstate 81 near Scranton have been added to the Pinchot State Forest, forever protecting some of the last remaining high-quality wildlife habitat in the area while opening new public access for the city’s residents and visitors.
The Conservation Fund and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry recently announced the 436-acre expansion of Pinchot State Forest following final transfer of the land to DCNR.

New study shows fishing impact is huge and growing in New York’s Niagara County

New York’s Niagara County knows the impact that fishing and the outdoors have on the local economy. In 2009 and 2010, two separate economic impact studies were conducted through Niagara University.
A dozen years later, it was time to update the economic impact study. Capt. Frank Campbell, Outdoor Promotions Director with Destination Niagara USA worked closely with John Percy, president and CEO of Destination Niagara USA, to find a new company for the study. Young Strategies out of North Carolina was hired to perform the work. After a year of collecting data and collecting over 1,000 surveys in 2022, the results are finally in.

Bass, bluegill, perch to be had at Iowa’s Silver Lake in Worth County this fall

Anglers who are not ready to get off the water quite yet this fall have a good opportunity to target largemouths, perch and bluegills on Silver Lake in Iowa’s Worth County.
This 316-acre body of water, which has a max depth of just over 7 feet, sits a little more than 10 miles northwest of the city of Northwood.

Enchanting Palette of southern Illinois: Autumn’s many wonders have been unveiled

As summer’s long, languid days give way to the crisp, amber-hued embrace of autumn, a magical transformation sweeps across Southern Illinois.
Here, where the rolling hills of the Shawnee National Forest meet the winding curves of the Ohio River, the Kaskaskia River, and the Mississippi meet at their confluence below the bluffs of Randolph County, nature paints a masterpiece that beckons visitors from near and far. The wonders of southern Illinois outdoors in autumn are a symphony of colors, flavors, and experiences that stir the soul and ignite a deep connection to the land.

Wealth of acorns offers array of opportunities in the deer woods

This year is shaping up to be a mighty interesting deer season in Minnesota for a whole slew of reasons.
The one that is capturing my attention currently is the absurdly humongous acorn crop smothering the ground. If you’ve stepped outside in any capacity in the past month, you’ve likely had to do a dance to avoid a tumble from the skating rink of brown marbles. Though mast years, when most oaks dish out a glut of acorns, are relatively common, typically occurring every two to five years, this year is truly something to behold. I recall a couple of large mast years, but nothing holds a candle to this year.

Giving up hunting and fishing because of age is painful, but the memories endure

The Old Guy, for some time, had not been able to verbalize it because, he thought, if he did, if he said it out loud, it would become real. Reality would be a problem, with duck season and deer season on the horizon, and after that, next year, the turkey season. And in between all that, trout fishing.
But saying it is vastly different than thinking it. To begin with, the Old Guy didn’t have to say anything, did not have to form words. But he could not control his thoughts, even if he was at war with them. Even if the idea was painful.

Pennsylvania hunting license sales up over 10% from same time last year

Pennsylvania hunting license sales were up by 10.5% over last year in mid-September, prompting speculation about whether the new automated doe tag system had driven the increase.
As of Sept. 18, 2,657,245 licenses were sold, compared to 2,404,803 by Sept. 20, 2022, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. General licenses totaled 636,030 compared to 604,025 at the same time last year, for a 5.3% increase. What the numbers mean, “time will tell,” said commission spokesman Travis Lau.
