For 40 years, North Dakota’s Report All Poachers program has played big role in catching violators

I don’t remember the year, but I was a young hunter with my dad near Twin Lakes in LaMoure County, N.D. It was so long ago there were actually two lakes with a road in between before the wet cycle created one lake that’s more famous now for fishing than it was back when the legendary New York Yankees manager Billy Martin was frequently spending the offseason hunting nearby.
It was a popular spot for the old tradition of pass shooting. Hunters sat along the fence line waiting for ducks and geese to move off and between the lakes separated by a gravel road during the sunrise feed.

Wisconsin Conservation Congress committee rejects DNR’s wolf plan draft

Conservation Congress Wolf Committee members had opposed the original draft of a DNR updated wolf plan that was released in November 2022, and now moved up its 2023 fall meeting to review a revised wolf plan (released Aug. 1) prior to it being presented to the Natural Resources Board (NRB) on Oct. 25 in Madison.
The committee, chaired by Ed Harvey, Jr., met Sept. 23 at the Marathon County Library, with 13 members attending in person and five via a virtual option.

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board panel seems to support wolf plan

Recent revisions to the DNR’s updated wolf plan drew plenty of comments and questions from five Natural Resources Board (NRB) members at their Sept. 27 meeting, with all five sounding supportive of the plan.
Comments showed they feel the new plan is critical to managing wolves, will encourage wolf delisting, and help citizens deal with problems wolves cause. Randy Johnson, DNR large carnivore specialist, gave board members a brief report on the plan that will come to the board for approval Oct. 25 in Madison.

Struggles continue with New York State’s new firearms and ammunition background check system

New York State Rifle and Pistol Association President Tom King says he’s never had any run-ins with the law. So, he was surprised that when sampling New York’s new firearms and ammunition background check system – NYS NICS – that he was initially denied purchase of a box of .410 shotgun shells.
“Why I would get turned down, I have absolutely no idea,” King said of his experience with the new system. “I was buying a box of .410 ammo. But of all things, that’s not a threat to anybody.”
The actual status of King’s attempted purchase at first was “delayed.” Five hours later it was officially “denied.” Then, when King was reviewing on the State Police website how to appeal, the decision was reversed.

Bucket-list fish to target? Give me big bull bluegills every time!

For two consecutive editions recently, Ohio Outdoor News Editor Mike Moore crafted a “Sounding Board” question for selected readers basically querying them on their bucket list fishing trip destination.
Up swam “muskie” from one reader (been there, done that, I thought), another was to fly fish the Yellowstone River for rainbow trout (done that and been there, also). Another reader opined as to how she would like to go salt-water fishing for halibut (yep, that’s a harvested one, too), while another opined that he wished to fish for Colorado’s native cutthroat trout. (That one was checked-off my bucket list about 25 years ago).

Pay attention to sub-surface currents to put more walleyes in your boat

The looks were all the same: seven people wondering what the heck just happened.
After a 25-minute trolling pass with 11 fish caught, we were halfway through our return pass and had nothing, zip, zero. Everything was the same: our speed, depth, lures. The fish were still on the sonar, but nothing. We got back to where we had started, got the Angler Qwest turned around and almost instantly, “Wham,” a planer board goes back, and we are on our way to another great pass.
If this sounds familiar, you’re probably missing the one factor we weren’t paying attention to: sub-surface currents.
