Understand the four stages of river walleyes to catch more fish this spring

If you live anywhere close to a river that has walleyes, you probably can’t wait to get the fishing season started.
River walleye behavior in early spring is driven by many factors including water temperature (both surface and bottom), length of daylight, moon phase, and more. Understanding the stages of spring river walleyes and how they act in each phase – and putting your time in so you are on the water when these factors align – will help you catch more fish this spring.

Shift your focus, at least a little bit, toward ‘hunting’ for big walleyes this fall

As temperatures fall and leaves start to turn, lots of sportsmen in the Great Lakes region head to the woods for some hunting. This year consider delaying the start of your hunting season and go “hunting” for some of the biggest walleye you will catch all season.
Walleyes are fairly easy to catch in the fall once they are located.

Pay attention to sub-surface currents to put more walleyes in your boat

The looks were all the same: seven people wondering what the heck just happened.
After a 25-minute trolling pass with 11 fish caught, we were halfway through our return pass and had nothing, zip, zero. Everything was the same: our speed, depth, lures. The fish were still on the sonar, but nothing. We got back to where we had started, got the Angler Qwest turned around and almost instantly, “Wham,” a planer board goes back, and we are on our way to another great pass.
If this sounds familiar, you’re probably missing the one factor we weren’t paying attention to: sub-surface currents.
