Large Pennsylvania Game Commission acquisitions help to create new game lands

Pennsylvania game commissioners at their recent quarterly meeting added substantially to the state game lands system, with three deals especially noteworthy.
First, the commissioners approved an oil and gas agreement with Pennsylvania General Energy Co. The company will extract oil and gas from beneath a portion of State Game Land 75 in Brown and Pine townships, Lycoming County, using existing infrastructure so that there’s no net increase in surface disturbance. In exchange, the company will convey to the Game Commission 2,195 acres in Spring Creek Township, Warren County, known as the Spring Creek Tract, and 943 acres in East Taylor and Croyle townships, Cambria County, known as the South Fork Tract.

Federal judge strikes down USFWS hellbenders ruling

A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to take another look at its 2019 decision denying endangered status protection for the eastern hellbender, the nation’s largest aquatic salamander that is found in low numbers in Pennsylvania and all Chesapeake Bay drainage states.
On Sept. 5, Judge Lewis Liman in a U.S. District Court in New York voided the federal agency’s 2019 decision.

Pennsylvania Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources distributes $1.4 million for snowmobile, ATV projects

Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn recently announced new grant funding totaling $1,397,400 for all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and snowmobile facilities and trails in Pennsylvania.
“Thousands of avid ATV and snowmobile riding enthusiasts recreate in Pennsylvania annually and DCNR supports projects that improve upon and expand these types of motorized recreation opportunities across the commonwealth,” Dunn said.

Pennsylvania Game Commission board moves toward reintroduction of marten

The Pennsylvania Game Commission took a step forward with its plan to reintroduce American martens during the quarterly commissioner’s meeting on Sept. 16.
The board approved a motion to release the draft reintroduction plan for public review. The plan outlines a 10-year strategy the agency will follow to translocate marten back into the state and monitor the reintroduction effort.  The plan also includes potential sources of martens, possible release locations and a timeline and cost estimate for the project.

Foraging this fall? Here’s how to do it safely and responsibly

Not terribly long ago, foraging and collecting wild and medicinal edibles was limited to a relatively small subset of outdoors enthusiasts. Nowadays, it seems downright trendy to forage. Just like the other outdoor pursuits we watch grow by leaps and bounds, it’s a bit of a double-edged sword.
We see many folks who aren’t familiar with or experienced in foraging and the nuances of gathering medicines and foods outdoors. All too often, these folks are relying on social media and online sources to help determine safety and proper identification.

Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever receive contracts with Iowa DNR to improve habitat

A series of contracts, including two with conservation groups, were unanimously approved at the September meeting of the Iowa Natural Resources Commission.
The contract with Ducks Unlimited (DU) calls for construction of a water control structure and installation of a fish barrier at Eagle Lake marsh in Hancock County. The current water control system has deteriorated, making management of water levels difficult. Water quality and fish habitat are expected to be improved by the project. Cost will not exceed $267,000.

Fishing mistakes: I’ve made (more than) a few, and it’s best to admit it

I’ve made plenty of mistakes during my career as a fisherman. It’s not easy to admit to being wrong about anything, but I’m a stand-up guy and I’ll suffer any slings and arrows I receive for admitting to some of my major goof-ups. I gave up thinking I was perfect a long time ago and I must admit that I don’t even aspire to achieve perfection anymore. Pretty good is about the best grade I can ever give myself.
Most of the mistakes I make are avoidable. Whether due to laziness, lack of knowledge or lack of time, I believe many of the things I have done wrong in the past could have been avoided.

Michigan brood survey shows stable pheasant numbers

Results from the annual mail carrier pheasant brood survey show that southern Michigan still has pheasants and they’re still reproducing, but drawing any further conclusions from the survey is almost impossible, said Adam Bump, upland game bird specialist with the Department of Natural Resources.
The number of broods observed was up slightly and the number of chicks per brood is about average for recent surveys. The survey has been conducted in its present form for 19 years, Bump said.
“We’re seeing more broods than we have in the 19-year survey average, but smaller broods,” Bump said.
