Coho salmon fishing, beauty of Mendenhall Glacier highlights of Alaskan trip

If there’s anything more exciting than the call of, “Fish on!” it has to be, “Two fish on!”
Battling two coho salmon at the same time by father and son was a highlight of a trip to Alaska. While on a morning charter outing, the first fish hit a squid-jig down about 40 feet and the rod began pumping up and down as I tried to begin reeling in the fish.
The next thing I knew a second rod pumped up and down, which my son, Shawn Eisele, of Juneau, Alaska, took up and began reeling in. As we gained line, each reel, in turn, squealed as each fish pulled line against the drag. We eventually began gaining line back on the reel.

Iowans invited to help set priorities for important outdoor projects through state’s REAP program

Every two years, Iowans have the chance to learn about the impact of Iowa’s Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program by attending one of 18 regional local assemblies around the state. Iowa’s REAP program represents one of Iowa’s largest and most consistent investments in wildlife, habitat, public lands, cultural affairs and outdoor recreation programs.
Since its beginning in 1989, REAP has helped fund the protection of Iowa’s beautiful and important resources.

Trail-camera traps: Try these three early-season, off-the-path ideas

When it comes to trail camera placement, hunters often lean hard on the usual suspects. Field and food plot edges are obvious spots. Logging or access roads that wind their way through the woods also make the list. Most hunters tend to place cameras in places where they know bucks will travel, but that’s seeking confirmation bias and not fresh recon.
While it’s fun to get plenty of images in the only soybean field in the section, if you want actionable intel, it’s often better to use your cameras to scout. Following are three locations all bowhunters should consider hanging cameras to truly learn about buck behavior.
