Bear season may see slower start for New York hunters

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation remains confident that the state’s bear hunters will have a successful fall hunting season, but the action may come later rather than sooner.
DEC biologist Brendan Quirion said early season hunters likely will have difficulty crossing paths with a bruin.
“With ample food in the woods, it may be difficult for bear hunters to key in on specific food sources that bears are utilizing consistently,” Quirion said.

Man gets 5 years for role in huge Wisconsin poaching case from Waupaca County

A Fox Valley man will spend five years in prison for his role in a Waupaca County deer poaching case that authorities said is one of Wisconsin’s largest in recent memory.
Meanwhile, the other defendant in the case remains free in Texas after failing to show up for a Wisconsin court hearing. Eric A. Feavel, 41, of Menasha, pleaded guilty Aug. 10 in Waupaca County Circuit Court to three felony counts of bail jumping and three misdemeanor counts of illegal shining of deer. Waupaca County Circuit Court Judge Troy Nielsen also permanently revoked Feavel’s hunting privileges and fined him $1,000, plus court costs, on each of the three shining charges.

Completed Mazurik fish cleaning station getting good use by anglers of Lake Erie’s Western Basin

Anglers looked forward to the opening of the Mazurik Fish Cleaning Station earlier this year as the walleye fishing heated up in the Lake Erie Western Basin.
In addition to Mazurik, other stations were opened at Huron and Avon Lake. All three are welcome additions for Lake Erie anglers. Anglers from around the country, including Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, have all used the Mazurik station since its soft opening in May. The Mazurik location was officially dedicated July 20 with Gov. Mike DeWine, ODNR Director Mary Mertz, and Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker speaking.

Focus on flatheads: Big fish are waiting in Pennsylvania’s warm-water rivers

It was too darn hot to fish during the day.
So we waited and waited. Sitting under the shade of an aging sycamore, with the boat already launched and pulled back up to shore, we dozed until the sun was close to setting.
No matter, we knew the fish we were after bit better at night. That fish, the invasive but tenacious flathead catfish – and by the way, the only fish that ever, anywhere, snapped a rod I was using – has become a popular target in every part of Pennsylvania with a “warm” river.

Shovel Lake resident, Mike Chalich, elected as president of Minnesota Sharp-tailed Grouse Society

For every live-long day for almost four decades, Mike Chalich was a railroad man, traveling about in Minnesota and North Dakota, observing the changes in the landscape as he went.
Work with the Soo Line Railroad, which later became Canadian Pacific Railroad, took Chalich from Remer to St. Paul to Enderlin, N.D., to Minneapolis to Glenwood to Minot, N.D., and eventually back to St. Paul. Now, he’s back to where it all began, living near the old railroad town of Shovel Lake (the railroad is now an ATV trail), down the road from Swatara in Aitkin County, Minn.

Iowa DNR asks for public’s help to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic plants around West Okoboji Lake

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is asking for help to prevent the spread of Eurasian watermilfoil and brittle naiad around West Okoboji Lake.
The DNR continues to work with partners to develop a management plan and move through the permitting process. Boaters and other lake users must be extra vigilant when cleaning their boats and equipment to prevent the spread of these invasive aquatic plants into the main part of West Okoboji Lake or other lakes.

After a down stretch, Michigan’s Lake St. Clair giving up limits of walleyes again

Back in the 1960s, Lake St. Clair was the place to go to fish for walleyes in southeast Michigan. Lake Erie? It was unaffectionately known as the Dead Sea, a polluted sump that caught fire (actually it was the tributary Cuyahoga River) in 1969.
Much has changed over the past six decades. These days, Lake Erie is recognized as perhaps the best walleye fishery in the world. And Lake St. Clair? For a long time it was an afterthought to walleye fishermen.
