Commentary: Ohio’s right to hunt and fish initiative lacks needed substance

The proposed legislation to make hunting and fishing a constitutional right in Ohio does not provide the protection for these time-honored traditions that backers believe they do.
I have been following the right to hunt and fish initiatives across the United States for several years. Just over two years ago, I participated in a webinar hosted by the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses. It included speakers from several states. They presented what their bills accomplished and how they managed the ballot process required to enshrine the language in their respective state constitutions.

Ohio’s Lake Loramie Passport to Fishing event a big hit

Lake Loramie is steeped in Ohio history. More than 200 years ago, it was a lone trading outpost and named for an early fur trader, Pierre Loramie.
The lake, which was completed in 1840, was built as part of the Ohio canal system. It is one of five lakes created to feed the canal system. A short feeder canal connected Lake Loramie to the main canal. It was in 1917 that the Ohio state legislature approved the report to create a state park officially to be known as Lake Loramie.

Completed Mazurik fish cleaning station getting good use by anglers of Lake Erie’s Western Basin

Anglers looked forward to the opening of the Mazurik Fish Cleaning Station earlier this year as the walleye fishing heated up in the Lake Erie Western Basin.
In addition to Mazurik, other stations were opened at Huron and Avon Lake. All three are welcome additions for Lake Erie anglers. Anglers from around the country, including Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, have all used the Mazurik station since its soft opening in May. The Mazurik location was officially dedicated July 20 with Gov. Mike DeWine, ODNR Director Mary Mertz, and Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker speaking.
