Michigan DNR and partners continue to fight large wildfire near Grayling

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced late Saturday that fire crews plan to work through the night to contain the estimated 2,400-acre Wilderness Trail Fire in Crawford County which closed I-75 for much of Saturday. The fire started around 1 p.m. about 4 miles southeast of Grayling near Staley Lake in Grayling Township.

Do brown trout have any self respect?

I’m a boat fisherman when it comes to fishing the Great Lakes.
Tom, a friend of mine, prefers fishing from the shore or on one of the piers to catch his share of salmon and trout. We decided to trade trips one weekend. I’d take him fishing on the boat on Saturday; on Sunday, I’d walk out on the pier with him and we’d fish the same general area with solid footing.

Organization blames trout kill in Pennsylvania’s Bushkill Creek on concrete plant

An environmental organization believes a maintenance procedure at a concrete plant and quarry resulted in a fish kill including wild brown trout on a section of Bushkill Creek, but the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission said it has not found any evidence.
Maya van Rossum, CEO of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, said a significant fish kill occurred on Bushkill Creek on May 17 and 18 during planned maintenance operations to install and test new backup generators at the Buzzi Unicem quarry.

A record by a beard hair (or feather)? The story of a gobbler to remember

Every once in a while a turkey hunt goes exactly as you want it to. That’s what happened on May 2, the morning I bagged what is perhaps my best spring gobbler to date.
The hunt took place in a grassy clearing on the side of a mountain near my home in the southeastern Adirondacks. This location, which is in Warren County, has been a consistent mature gobbler producer over the years and some scouting just ahead of the season revealed that it might be again.

Trempealeau County turkeys coy, but callable in Wisconsin

Had I spent another minute cutting prickly ash to create a spot to sit against a giant oak along a field edge, I may not have had a chance to kill a gobbler during Wisconsin’s second turkey hunting period. Let me explain.
The morning of April 26 dawned clear, cold and quiet as I sat on the edge of a field in Trempealeau County. No gobbling greeted the daylight, and the only turkey action I saw was the fly-down of two birds on the far side of the field.
