Major restoration effort to improve water quality in Iowa’s Black Hawk Lake continues

Dredging work planned for Black Hawk Lake will improve overall water quality, fish habitat and recreational opportunities. An area approximately 174 acres in the eastern main basin of the lake will be deepened to nine feet, removing about 750,000 cubic yards of material from the lake. Dredging will help manage aquatic vegetation in the main basin of the lake, reduce re-suspension of sediments due to wind and wave action, and remove high-phosphorus sediments.

Report shows how much fishing fuels Minnesota’s, nation’s economy

A recent report produced by the American Sportfishing Association illustrates just how important sportfishing is as an economic engine for creating wealth and jobs, and pumping investments into land and water conservation in Minnesota and beyond.
Minnesota ranks fourth in “economic output,” with fishing generating $4.2 billion. That includes 28,120 jobs supported.

Persistence pays off with a huge rainbow on rainy Mentored Youth Trout Day in Pennsylvania

Chilled and hungry, we agreed we’d stay until 11 a.m. and then pack it up to go over to the main pavilion for lunch. With minutes to spare, we noticed a subtle bump in one of the rod tips, and then a steadier pulse, indicating a strong bite.
With the hook set, Foster started reeling in his fish just like the others, but it seemed to be taking more line. Suddenly, it jumped to the surface with an abrupt splash, and we both saw it was a much more sizable trout than the others.

Omnibus bills in Minnesota include Asian carp, CWD, BWSR

Funding to slow or halt the advance of Asian carp is not presently moving forward. House File 2310, authored by Rep. Rick Hansen, DFL-South St. Paul, and Senate File 2438, authored by Sen. Foung Hawj, DFL-St. Paul, provided funds for further studies and research on the carp issue, but so far the bills do not include the $16.8 million request to build a carp barrier at Lock and Dam 5 on the Mississippi River.

Winged Freedom Raptor Hospital in Wisconsin releases ‘patients’

Veterinarian Kim Ammann and the volunteers at Winged Freedom Raptor Hospital in Spooner have been busy in recent weeks. A barred owl with a broken wing and a pair of bald eagles were recently ready to release.
Healing a bird like the young barred owl takes time. Sometimes it takes more time than anticipated. Ammann walked the owl into a clearing for the release. The bird clicked his beak, one of his defense methods, and seemed ready to soar high and disappear into the tall pines in the area.

Minnesota House and Senate bills differ on fee hikes, boat access funding

The House and Senate environment and natural resources omnibus bills were approved this past week at the State Capitol. Two discrepancies of note between the two bills were related to the DNR’s Get Out More initiative and fishing license and other fee increases.

Turkey hunters: would you shoot a jake?

If you are a sportsman who believes bigger is better, I can’t fault you. I feel the same way, but I learned a valuable lesson during the New York spring turkey hunting season 20 years ago that showed me that a bird shouldn’t be memorable simply by the length of its spurs or beard. When I think of the turkeys with which I reached my two-tom limit that spring, I measure them by the excitement they provided me on those hunts. As you prepare for the upcoming turkey season, you might be interested in my experiences 20 years ago.
