Bass and bluegill are the main draws for anglers on Kent County’s Wabasis Lake. But a recent stocking program is aimed at adding another game fish to the mix.

Since 1985, the DNR has focused its efforts on stocking walleyes in Lake St. Helen including 148,415 in 2016, 2.3 million in 2017, and 203,256 in 2018.

In the most recent status of the fishery survey of Hubbard, biologists caught very good numbers of walleyes, smallmouth bass, rock bass, and yellow perch, and decent numbers of northern pike.

The walleyes ranged up to 23 inches and northern pike to 36.

Chalk Hills supports a good fishery with evidence of natural reproduction for several species. The walleye and smallmouth populations appear strong.

The large, deep lake supports a wide variety of both coolwater and warmwater species. In fact, fisheries biologists collected 55 different species of fish in the most recent survey of the fishery. Many anglers tout

It’s one of those inland lakes that attracts a fair number of anglers looking to tangle with a lunker bass, a hungry trout, a slab panfish, or a feisty northern pike.

Between 2018 and 2019 a total of 24 ‘gills meeting Master Angler requirements (10 inches or larger) were registered by anglers fishing in Otsego. All the ‘gills were between 10 and 11.5 inches long.
