Attention is still being given to hybrid striped bass in Lake Glenn Shoals, but largemouth bass aren’t conceding the spotlight yet.

During 2019 bass tournaments registered with DNR, the top 5 bass caught weighed in at 6.5, 6.4, 6.26 and 6.10 (two fish) pounds. Several more were caught right around the 6-pound mark.

Muskies and walleyes have fared well at the relatively deep Lake McMaster, which is situated within the 2,500 acre Snakeden Hollow State Fish & Wildlife Area.

And the lake, also known as Jones State Lake, produces largemouth bass up to 7 pounds.

Last winter, Indiana side of Wolf reportedly produced 14 walleyes over six pounds, including one nearly eight pounds. Other fish, especially bass, perch and crappies, also had impressive numbers.

And DNR reports that it has good populations of largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and channel catfish, with a very good population bowfin, so the lake is full of fish.

Newton Lake is changing and hasn’t produced one of its famous 10-pounders in a long time, but the 1,750-acre Jasper County cooling reservoir still ranks high among anglers.

Carlton’s muskie population is a surprise to many. There are bigger muskies swimming the waters – it’s included on the list of lakes in Illinois that has yielded a muskie 50 inches or larger.

Salmon size in 2019 heaviest since record-keeping began.
