Jeff Byrne has heard it all. Byrne, the longtime owner of Cabin Fever Sporting Goods in Victoria, Minn., in the southwest metro area, sells bait and fishing tackle, as well as other outdoor gear, including archery equipment. Propane, too.
“I had ice-fishing customers come in (last) weekend who told me they were making tee times for later this coming week,” he said on Monday afternoon.

Minnesota DNR report shows wetland gains made during past 15 years

From 2006 to 2020, Minnesota saw a net gain of 43,000 acres of wetlands, most of which were emergent wetlands found in the past six years in agricultural areas that tend to show up after periods of higher precipitation.
That’s one of the key findings of the Wetland Status and Trends Monitoring Report released recently by the Minnesota DNR. The report, DNR officials say, suggests the state’s Wetland Conservation Act – a law enacted in 1991 requiring no net loss of wetlands – is serving its intended purpose.

Jim Killen was known to look at life as a painting in waiting.
“It starts with a dream and a blank canvas and it’s anybody’s guess how it will turn out,” he’d say. “Then brushstroke by brushstroke with time and care, something beautiful starts to take shape …”

Minnesota DNR seeking public input on early teal hunt, waterfowl season splits through upcoming survey

The Minnesota DNR is preparing to roll out a general waterfowl-hunter survey. It’s an effort to collect information on a range of topics, most notably hunter opinions on an early September teal season and the state’s three-tier hunting-zone system.
The agency, which conducts such surveys roughly every three years, is slated to mail 4,000 survey postcards this week to randomly selected waterfowl hunters who purchased state duck stamps last year.

Prospective college intern? The Minnesota DNR has positions available

The Minnesota DNR, one of Minnesota’s largest state agencies, is looking to fill a wide array of paid summer internships for college students considering careers in natural resources.
The 2024 internships – roughly 200 in total – include a variety of statewide opportunities throughout the agency, including in fisheries and wildlife, park operations and forestry, as well as communications and watercraft inspection and many others. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 31.

Minnesota, McLeod County loses conservation icon in Dr. Virgil C. Voigt

Minnesota, the McLeod County area in particular, has lost a conservation icon and ambassador. Dr. Virgil C. Voigt, a retired veterinarian, lifelong conservationist and outdoorsman, and a well-respected community leader who worked tirelessly to improve the state’s natural resources, died Dec. 25. Voigt, of Hutchinson, was 83.

Ice rescues on Upper Red, Lake of the Woods drowning are low points in difficult ice-fishing season in Minnesota

On Monday, Mike Burville rang in the New Year by cutting a few holes through the ice on 547-acre First Silver Lake just north of Battle Lake in Otter Tail County.
Burville wanted to dust off his ice-fishing gear, but in a responsible way. A smaller lake would have better ice conditions, he thought, unlike some of the county’s larger waters that remain open in some areas. His scouting paid off.

Poor ice not so nice for Minnesota’s fishing retailers

During a normal December, business is booming at Blue Ribbon Bait & Tackle in Oakdale.
“It’s typically our busiest time of year,” said Blue Ribbon owner, general manager, and fishing guide Josh Stevenson, who purchased the popular outdoor shop in 2004. “Kids are off for Christmas break. College students are home. A lot of people are taking vacation. Everyone goes a little a crazy indoors after a while, and they want to get out and many go ice fishing. Not this year. I’ve never seen business this slow. It’s completely unprecedented.”
