Minnesota fishing opener was grade A for the weather; fishing, too, in many cases

Unless you’re convinced that to properly catch walleyes in Minnesota, clouds must fill the sky – perhaps offering a light spitting of rain – and waves must rock your craft, you had to thoroughly enjoy the 2025 version of the state’s fishing opener.

By afternoon last Saturday, temperatures in the 70s dotted nearly the entire state, sunny conditions prevailed, a light wind gently tossed about the boats of anglers, and, in most cases, walleyes were biting … of course, with some exceptions. Opening-day anglers on Upper Red Lake were likely some of the most appreciative of the conditions.

Landowner conservation assistance could take hit in Trump proposal for the NRCS

Navigating government programs has never been for the faint of heart, nor has it been something citizens have dared wade into alone, should some form of assistance be available.
That’s true of conservation programs, too. And it’s why conservation groups in general and Pheasants Forever in particular expressed concern earlier this month when President Donald Trump released a budget outline for the fiscal year (2026) that begins Oct. 1. Per a May 2 PF press release, “The so-called ‘skinny budget’ would reduce the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s budget by more than 18% from existing levels. As part of those cuts, conservation technical assistance at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) would be slashed by $754 million.”

Streams of Thought: Kudos to Minnesota’s Jeff Manke and others like him

I haven’t yet taken the opportunity to offer my congratulations and thanks to our 2025 Person of the Year, Jeff Manke, of Cambridge, Minn.
Jeff’s various contributions to the outdoors and his local community were featured in the previous edition of Outdoor News, and he follows in a long line of worthy award winners dating back to 1999. It’s been my honor to help select those winners for the past nine years.

Audit report delves into Minnesota DNR’s land acquisition reporting deficiencies

While generally satisfied with the process by which the DNR acquires land in Minnesota and which lands are acquired, so-called stakeholders – landowners, partner groups, local officials, and DNR staffers themselves – often are frustrated by the time it takes for such acquisitions to be complete.
Meanwhile, the DNR’s reporting of public land inventory and annual transactions leaves something to be desired.

A natural leader, Jeff Manke honored as Minnesota Outdoor News’ 2025 Person of the Year

For all Minnesotans who fashion themselves outdoors types, spring is a busy time – busy, in the most positive and exciting sense of the word. Turkey hunting, fishing, and more, all of which consume a magnificent season of the year in our state.
Jeff Manke, again this spring, will take the concept of being busy to greater extremes than will the average person preparing his boat or smiling upon the most recent green-up of woods and grasslands.

‘Do-not-eat’ fish advisories announced on heels of tests for PFAS in Minnesota

Most Minnesota anglers have made it common practice to know, or to check on, special regulations for lakes and rivers they intend to fish. But how many take the extra step to determine if state officials have issued consumption advisories regarding the fish that might be caught in those waters?
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recently issued a news release announcing updates to fish consumption advisories for a number of water bodies in the state, including “do-not-eat” advisories suggesting “everyone to completely avoid eating certain fish.”

Renowned wildlife photographer Jim Brandenburg dies at 79

Jim Brandenburg, whose humble beginnings in nature photography began in southwestern Minnesota and who would gain world acclaim through National Geographic and other publications, died April 4 at his Medina, Minn., home.
The 79-year-old native of Luverne “passed away peacefully … surrounded by his loving family,” according to a family Facebook post that also stated Brandenburg had been receiving treatment for anaplastic thyroid carcinoma the past seven months, with additional complications from pneumonia this year.

Is another record tom harvest in the cards for Minnesota this spring?

When Minnesota’s spring turkey season begins on April 16, hunters should expect much of what they experienced a year ago – good bird numbers, unpredictable turkey behavior, and similarly unpredictable spring weather, officials say.
But will it be another record-breaker? A year ago, the 16,700 toms taken during the spring hunt represented the highest harvest of the modern era.
