Streams of Thought: Litterers, vandals ruin access opportunities on a Minnesota Wildlife Management Area

Some old DNR friends of mine used to joke that before they erected shiny news signs on state lands, they considered first taking them to a gun range to “pre-emptively” put a round of bird shot into ’em. You know, save someone the trouble of doing it for them after the signs went into the ground.
Pelleted signs, however, are often the least of the problem when it comes to state lands – wildlife management areas, in particular – abuses.

Streams of Thought: Some lessons learned from a recent fishing trip to Ontario

Since my head last occupied this box, I’ve been to Ontario and back, to fish the hallowed waters of Lake of the Woods and to share in adventure with 11 other fine folks – most of whom I’ve known since kidhood.
Our fishing party’s size and composition have ebbed and flowed and changed and changed again during the past three decades, but the core remains, albeit with less hair and more aches and pains. In the interest of those who might soon similarly sojourn to a place of solitude and fishyness, I offer lessons I learned, and other reminders that were served earlier this June.

Testing for CWD will expand in Minnesota in 2025; ban on feeding deer, too

Last week, the Minnesota DNR added eight additional counties to a deer feeding and attractant ban, bringing the total of where the ban is in effect to 32 counties. It’s in those new areas, too, where deer hunters can expect mandatory whitetail testing for chronic wasting disease come the firearms opening weekend this fall.
“The feeding and attractant ban is one tool to reduce unnatural congregating of deer and lower the risk of CWD spread,” said Paul Burr, acting DNR big-game program coordinator in an agency news release. “We use this tool where it provides the greatest benefit to the health of Minnesota’s white-tailed deer.”

Streams of Thought: More anglers turned away at border crossings as Canada ‘digs in its heels’ in regards to AIS prevention

As the wily veteran of nearly 30 international border crossings into Ontario over the past few decades, I could probably impress Canada’s border agents by asking myself the questions that more than likely they’ll ask me.
Sure, it’s been a learning experience along the way, but eventually, you get the hang of the routine, and things generally go smoothly.

Streams of Thought: All quiet from the Minnesota Capitol, and six good years with Liza the Lab

What’s the news from the Minnesota Capitol? As I write this, there really isn’t any. There’s talk of a special session upcoming, behind-closed-doors negotiations ongoing, and House and Senate leaders emerging with smiles that suggest perhaps a bump or two of the good stuff was shared in the chamber confines. (Unless that’s illegal; I don’t know. If it is, maybe it shouldn’t be.)

New Cessna 206 promises great changes ahead for how Minnesota DNR does work

From more than a mile away, it can spy loons nesting on a lake below. During the dead of night, it can pick off perpetrators illegally cutting spruce tops and pine boughs from Minnesota forests. And at more than 5,000 feet in altitude, it can pinpoint a “hot spot” in a forest that could blossom into the state’s next big wildfire event.
Meet the Minnesota DNR’s newest and most impressive tool, intended to assist in enforcement activities, wildlife research, fire detection, and much more: a 2024 Cessna 206 loaded with more than 400 pounds of equipment, including a state-of-the art camera system – the MX-10.

What will become of measures that affect Minnesota’s outdoors during special session?

The state Legislature adjourned late Monday without budget resolution, meaning an expected special session likely will be upcoming. It was yet to be announced at Outdoor News press deadline on Tuesday.
While the budget debate between Minnesota Republicans and DFLers revolves around matters beyond the outdoors and the state DNR – think education, health and human services, etc. – a DNR official said certain policy issues that would affect hunters and anglers also remain in limbo.

Wildfires continue to burn in northeastern Minnesota

As a soaking rain was predicted to move through parts of Minnesota early this week, the portion of the state that might welcome it most – the Arrowhead region – was expected to remain cool, dry, and perhaps windy as firefighters continued to battle two large blazes that have been burning for more than a week and half and have consumed nearly 30,000 acres combined.

Streams of Thought: The sprint to the end of Minnesota’s legislative session is on

With nearly the palpable anticipation of its followers, the 2025 Minnesota legislative session is nearing its end.
And I must say, I haven’t seen this much drama since “Days of our Lives” during my college years – when the sweet and innocent Kayla was falling for bad-boy “Patch,” Bo and Hope Brady were so perfect a couple as to have been matched by God himself, and Roman Brady, presumed dead, re-emerged as something called John Black, after the requisite appearance-altering plastic surgery, of course.
