Streams of Thought: Time for a return to turkey hunting

It’s been a few years since I’ve hunted turkeys, mostly attributable to an intense fear of Lyme disease and early wake-up calls. I suppose those are terrible or valid excuses, depending on your perspective.
But the turkey population in the neighborhood seems it could be trimmed by a tom or two, and the gobbles I hear most mornings as the pup does her thing along the edge of the woods have convinced me to make a triumphant (or something like that) return to the game, ticks and alarm clock be damned.

For travelers to Canada, tariff plan announced in early March is off

Anglers and other travelers to Canadian provinces who were fretting at the prospect of delays and added costs upon reaching border crossings, can, for now, breathe easier.
On Thursday, March 27, Ontario resorters and tourism groups announced that additional tariffs – 25% – on “consumables” for the most part will not be in play.
“Basically, nothing is going to change (from past rules pertaining to entry to Canada),” said Laurie Marcil, executive director of Nature and Outdoor Tourism Ontario, in North Bay. “It’s super news.”

Ice-out ahead of schedule in Minnesota, but not a repeat of 2024

If you think declaration of “ice-out” for Minnesota lakes is precision science, you’d be incorrect. And again this year, as the phenomenon of ice melt advances south to north across Minnesota, determining what constitutes ice-out continues to be a mix of general guidelines and quirky traditions, depending on the lake that’s under review.
Take Lake Mille Lacs, for example.

Streams of Thought: Unless things change, anglers can expect extra costs, headaches crossing Canadian border this summer

The annual – mostly, but for a few interruptions – sojourn my friends and I make to Ontario to fish each spring has, over the years, come with a hiccup or two when crossing the border between the United States and Canada.
There was the delay for my brother’s high school graduation in the late 1990s. The rest of the gang apparently preferred an extra day of fishing to my swell company on the road trip, so I drove solo a day in their rearviews.

Streams of Thought: Minnesota foragers gather at the State Capitol

I don’t necessarily fashion myself a forager; however, I’ll certainly pick wild blackberries by the bucket when the gettin’s good, as it was last summer.
I used to perform futile searches for wild blueberries on nearby state land. But even the best of my friends refused to give away their secret hot spots, and I couldn’t seem to find the berries before being mauled by bugs, so I planted a few of my own bushes.

Minnesota DNR plan addresses bear range change, ag damage

While Minnesota bear hunters bask in the glow of what was the highest bear kill in more than 20 years, DNR officials are asking for their opinion on plans to potentially tweak some bear management unit boundaries in the state.
The proposed changes, however, aren’t necessarily aimed at reducing bear harvest which, in 2023, dove off a cliff, when nearly half the number of bears were killed as in 2024. Rather, the DNR’s proposal is directed at addressing areas of the state – largely in the areas of transition from agriculture to forest – where crop damage complaints arise.

For whitetails in much of Minnesota, it’s been another winter of recovery

The ease of last year’s winter season appeared unlikely to repeat itself as far as the Minnesota deer herd is concerned. However, as February draws to a close, the winter of 2024-25 seems destined to fall into the “mild” classification once again. Just not as mild as a year ago.
In many parts of Minnesota, that’s good news for deer, and for deer hunters.

Streams of Thought: Minnesota’s Howling for Wolves ‘pauses’ activities; and DNR names new region fisheries manager

A recent tip from a reader – thanks, Mike – led me to a news release from the Minnesota organization, Howling for Wolves. Most folks who read this publication probably recognize that group’s name.
For several years, stories related to wolves and wolf hunting have often included quotes from the group’s leader, Dr. Maureen Hackett, as a means of demonstrating what, exactly, proponents of state wolf management – and hunting – are fighting against. But no more, as far as HFW is concerned. The Feb. 9 release from the group says it’s “pausing” its activities.

Streams of Thought: Details on a Minnesota bill for bird groups

As a longtime member and volunteer for Ducks Unlimited and a member of other bird-focused conservation organizations, I noted last week that a few of these groups were represented last week at the State Capitol. There, a member and former state chair of DU testified in, of all places, the Senate Taxes Committee in support of S.F. 345.
