Streams of Thought: Where are the public-land advocates when the topic turns tribal?

Nearly every major conservation group that’s known by readers of this publication includes access to public lands – for hunting, fishing, and otherwise – as a priority. And well they should. The future of these important endeavors depends upon those who partake, and those who partake need places in which to partake. Simple.
So today I ask, why is it the groups that promote public lands are largely silent when the topic turns tribal?

Dog Years: those years best spent

The way I see it, “dog years,” as people typically think about the phrase, doesn’t seem worth much. Upon examination, the computation might be a bit more complicated than the simple idea that one human calendar year equals approximately seven dog years. But what’s the point?
I think about dog years differently. To me, dog years, those spent with a particular dog or dogs, defines periods in our own lives – where we were, what we were doing – generally and specifically – what struggles we faced and, invariably, how that dog, no matter its age, guided us through the worst and the best of times.

Shovel Lake resident, Mike Chalich, elected as president of Minnesota Sharp-tailed Grouse Society

For every live-long day for almost four decades, Mike Chalich was a railroad man, traveling about in Minnesota and North Dakota, observing the changes in the landscape as he went.
Work with the Soo Line Railroad, which later became Canadian Pacific Railroad, took Chalich from Remer to St. Paul to Enderlin, N.D., to Minneapolis to Glenwood to Minot, N.D., and eventually back to St. Paul. Now, he’s back to where it all began, living near the old railroad town of Shovel Lake (the railroad is now an ATV trail), down the road from Swatara in Aitkin County, Minn.

Streams of Thought: Nicollet Conservation Club a worthy recipient of Outdoor Leaders Award, and what is South Dakota doing?

It’s my great honor to announce that the Nicollet Conservation Club has been named winner of Outdoor News’ 2023 Outdoor Leaders Award. The NCC joins a growing and distinguished list of organizations bestowed the award in past years, beginning with the Christina-Ina-Anka Lake Association in 2012, the first year of the award.
Minnesotans who consider themselves serious waterfowlers are well aware of the waterfowling resource in southern Minnesota known as Swan Lake. Well, if you think NCC, think Swan Lake.

Former Minnesota DNR commissioner Rod Sando dies at age 82

Norm Moody first recognized Rod Sando as an outdoors visionary many years ago, when the two were duck hunting together near Moody’s family farm in the vicinity of Scandia. It also was when Moody’s appreciation of Sando as a “super-mentor” was reinforced.
The farmer/landowner on whose property the two were pass-shooting ducks had produced more than a crop of hay and grass for his cattle late that summer. He’s also produced ducks and pheasants and other critters by leaving that stand of mixture of forbs throughout the spring and most of the summer.

Minnesota’s deer-hunting seasons to feature many new twists as regulations released

Autumn is a season of change. Those changes might even be greater this year if you’re a Minnesota deer hunter.
The 2023 Minnesota Hunting and Trapping Regulations booklet was made available online just days ago (132 pages), revealing upcoming archery, firearms, and muzzle-loader deer-hunting seasons that will include more restrictive harvest in some parts of the state (mainly in the north, following consecutive harsh winters), crossbow use allowed for all during the entire archery season, and more.

Considering a litter of puppies? Here’s what to know

The day was Sept. 20, 2021, and I was feeling pretty good about things as I drove home, pup by my side, from an animal eye specialist appointment in the greater Twin Cities.
For one thing, my black Lab, Liza, had received a passing grade from her eye test – one more hurdle cleared on the track to eventual first-time motherhood for the 2-year-old. For another, the checkup had cost a mere $47. Regarding finances required to produce a litter of puppies, that was a drop in the bucket, I was well aware.

Minnesota DNR tweaks state park special deer hunt lead rules

The 2022 Minnesota Hunting and Trapping Regulations booklet – Page 89 – highlighted new rules pertaining to lead ammunition use for special state park deer hunts (or disease-management hunts), as well as for scientific and natural area special and regular hunts. In short, lead ammo was banned for those hunts.
So why, then, did a DNR news release on July 20 restate, largely, what was spelled out a year ago? In part, because the rule in ’23 comes with an exemption – one that may require a workout, of sorts, for youth deer hunters, but only for those in the state’s shotgun zone.

Streams of Thought: Was Minnesota’s dry spring too dry for pheasant chicks?

Could a recent Outdoor News letter-to-the-editor writer have been correct? Was the spring so dry (and dew-free) that it affected pheasant production?
Stuart Thompson, of Fergus Falls, wrote the letter in our July 14 edition. A southwestern Minnesota wildlife observer thinks Stuart might be onto something. I’ll admit I hadn’t considered the possibility. But the observer claims that pheasant chick sightings have been minimal so far this summer.
