Minnesota DNR Roundtable topics range from climate to carp to moose matters

When the 2024 Minnesota DNR’s Roundtable convenes in Bloomington on Jan. 19, the hundreds in attendance won’t be first greeted by a bombshell “buffer initiative” like former Gov. Mark Dayton announced in 2015.
Nor will it hear about the intricacies of a particular state natural resource, as was the case in 2016, when Lake Mille Lacs management came under a collective microscope.

Streams of Thought: What’s ahead for the outdoors in the Minnesota Legislature this session?

Genius! I’m not averse to self-deprecation, but hey, when you’re right, you’re right.
In this space, approximately 8,800 hours ago, I looked deep into the recesses of my dusty crystal ball, then dared to become Nostradamus for a day. The fact that I’ve been on this beat for more than two decades, and that – along with knowing myself better with each passing year – aided me greatly.

USFWS charts a new path for Great Lakes’ gray wolves: Could federal delisting be years away?

On the heels of a deer-hunting season during which northern Minnesota hunters expressed displeasure with the kill and turned their collective ire toward gray wolves’ effects on the whitetail herd, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced a new “engagement” effort scheduled to last until 2026.

Streams of Thought: Wolf saga in Midwestern states takes another turn

Recent developments probably won’t find those who advocate for state management of the federally protected species in a celebratory mood. As this edition of Outdoor News headed to the print shop, we awaited information from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that will make for a dandy report in the upcoming edition.
Just to offer you a flavor: On Dec. 14, the Center for Biological Diversity announced that a federal court settlement will require the USFWS to draft a new recovery plan for gray wolves listed under the Endangered Species Act.

Minnesota’s pheasant hunt receives high grades this season

Is there a growing schism within the pheasant-hunting community?
Probably not, but there definitely are hunters who, during this oddly mild December, are haunted by visions of snow and cattails … and roosters. There also is a cadre of those who’ve been rejoicing that Ma Nature has provided a late season that doesn’t remotely resemble last year’s overly white version.

Streams of Thought: Some confusion regarding Minnesota’s new “storing garbage and other waste on ice” law

Sarcasm aside, there’s also a new law that’s now grabbing the attention of Minnesota ice anglers. You may or may not have read about state statute 97C.363 in the Dec. 1, 2023, edition of Outdoor News – the “storing garbage and other waste on ice” law.
You won’t find many detractors regarding this legislation, which includes specifics right down to cigarettes and fireworks.

Streams of Thought: Liza the Lab hunts with her pups, and the nut didn’t fall far from the tree

Soon, Liza the Lab and I will again head afield, hoping to roust the pheasants that a day ago largely evaded her nose and the noses of two other Labs as they combed the grasslands of southwestern Minnesota. It’s cooler today, and damp. I sense good things in our future.

Call it a comeback? Minnesota’s firearms deer harvest bounces back a bit after rough opening weekend

Led by the hard-charging hunters of central and southeastern Minnesota who offset the continued deer harvest decrease incurred by their counterparts in northern Minnesota, the preliminary deer kill after the first nine days of the firearms season was down just 5% from a year ago, according to the Minnesota DNR. A week ago at this time, harvest was down 13%.
