Steve Carney: An update from Minnesota/South Dakota border waters

The ice finally went out a few weeks ago on the Minnesota/South Dakota border waters of lakes Traverse and Big Stone, but as usual, the fish bite is yet to hit a high gear. I looked back several years in my log books and noticed the bite has usually been best about two to three weeks after ice-out.

Steve Carney: Final time on the ice produces some fun crappie action

The last week of ice fishing for this angler was a bittersweet affair, but it’s now time to put away ice-fishing gear and get ready for open water.
The past three weeks have been rather exciting, because crappies and bluegills have been in shallow water and many were caught just below the ice hole.

Steve Carney: Singing the big-perch blues from Minnesota, and a pike nails a transducer

There is no doubt that Minnesota’s perch fishing is below average when compared with that of some other states. Some social media posts of huge perch that I see often are from Michigan, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas.
One example is northwest Minnesota’s Otter Tail Lake. This at one time was a terrific perch fishery. Nowadays, it’s rare to catch anything over 7 or 8 inches.

Steve Carney: A kind response after an unfortunate ice-fishing outing

It began as a typical morning on the ice, with all fishing gear loaded and in order. Then, I arrived to my morning destination only to find my auger wasn’t cooperating. I struggled for a few minutes, eventually finding that a bolt had fallen off one of my auger blades, meaning I had only one, not two blades.

Steve Carney: Simple often is best … but split screens are nice

Most ice anglers these days are “flasher” people while on the ice. We’ve spent countless hours learning the good and bad of using flashers to mark fish, and we’ve become mostly comfortable with their use.
Lately, the new trend is the split screen combinations that feature a left-side traditional flasher and a right-side graph.
