Steve Carney: Quick thoughts on modern spinning reels; and summer bite heats up

Carney used to get multiple seasons out of his spinning reels, but he finds that, whatever the price range, most modern reels handle one of his guiding seasons. For that reason, he buys reels in the $65 to $95 range these days. (Photo by Steve Carney)

Through the years I have used probably a dozen brands of reels ranging in price from $50 to $175, and few have impressed me. The problem with the modern spinning reels of today is that they are made overseas and the quality is not made for serious longevity.
