Outdoor Insights: Public meetings on invasive carp coming up in Minnesota’s Mississippi River towns, plus more newsworthy bullet points

Late this month, several state nonprofits are hosting meetings in Mississippi River towns to engage the public on the status of silver and bighead carp.
Friends of the Mississippi River and the Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance are leading the soirees with partners like the Minnesota Conservation Federation. A main topic will be the Minnesota DNR’s Invasive Carp Action Plan, which the Legislature told the DNR to complete by Jan. 15.

Goodbye to ‘Bud’ and a record nontypical buck: Looking back on the top outdoor stories from Minnesota in 2023

In 2023, Minnesotans from all walks of life remembered the legendary Bud Grant, who died in March. Citizens will reap the benefits of his contributions to the state’s outdoors scene for decades to come.
Other milestones during the past 12 months included a new state record nontypical whitetail set of antlers, which tops a record that had stood for more than 50 years, plus multiple cougar stories, in increasingly odd places. And, oh yeah, those invasive Asian carp keep moving up the Mississippi River in ever-greater numbers.

Top 10 hunting and fishing movies to watch during these long winter nights

Selecting 10 top hunting and fishing films should be fun, right? Yet for the staff of Outdoor News, it was tougher than it sounds, because there are surprisingly few good ones.
Campy titles exist that portray Hollywood’s view of long-underwear-clad, modern Elmer Fudds stumbling about, but they’re more cringy than funny. If a solid spoof of hunting truly existed – say Caddyshack meets deer camp – we’d enjoy it and include it here. Until then, the 10 flicks we’ve selected here contain some form of hunting and fishing, but generally, they’re solid survival movies with good acting.

Outdoor Insights: 2023 was a year of major changes for conservation organizations

The past year has seen major changes in American conservation leadership at groups like Pheasants Forever and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. Add the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership to that list. The organization’s longtime CEO, Whit Fosburgh, left the group earlier this month.
Less extroverted and perhaps more camera-shy than other conservation honchos, Fosburgh quietly has been hitting natural resources home runs inside the Beltway for 30 years.

Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership announces leadership changes after longtime head Whit Fosburgh steps down

Another national sporting and conservation group has seen a leadership shakeup following the announcement earlier this month that Whit Fosburgh has left the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership.
Fosburgh, who led the influential group for 13 years, departed on Monday, Dec. 4. The group’s board of directors quickly announced that board member Becky Humphries would take over as acting CEO while the board searches for its next permanent head. In a phone interview with Outdoor News, Fosburgh said he was leaving the 21-year-old organization after his lengthy tenure for personal reasons to “recharge.”

Outdoor Insights: Pheasants Forever grows its lobbying horsepower in attempt to reverse trend of dwindling upland-bird habitat

St. Paul-based Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever continues to grow its lobbying horsepower in Washington D.C.
With its recent hiring of Ariel Wiegard as the its vice president of government affairs, the nonprofit now has four people focused on national conservation policy. As much as we admire grassroots, on-the-ground conservation work, sometimes successful lobbying in smoke-filled rooms delivers key public policy and, more importantly, dollars.

Outdoor Insights: What’s in a name when it comes to birds?

This newspaper printed a story last week about the American Ornithological Society’s plan to rename 80 species of North American birds named after people. We’re talking feathered friends like the Wilson’s phalarope, the Cooper’s hawk, and – as the Delta Waterfowl reprint last week noted – three waterfowl species.

Minnesota’s total deer harvest down 7% from 2022 through Nov. 19

The firearms deer kill in Minnesota struggled to gain ground through the season’s third weekend, and the DNR reports that cumulative statewide deer harvest across all seasons is down 7% from 2022.
As the northeast’s 16-day season wrapped up on Sunday, Nov. 19, the cumulative white-tailed deer kill through all seasons was 142,142. In addition to being behind last year, that’s 14% below the five-year mean and 10% off the 10-year mean.

Outdoor Insights: Minnesota’s CWD management practices proving to be quite successful by comparison

Last week’s Outdoor News reported a couple of new positive chronic wasting disease cases, one near Grand Rapids and the other around Northfield. That’s two too many, and with firearms hunting under way, expect more.
Through last Sunday, there were many results pending but no new positives. Our neighbor to the east proves it could be worse.
