Outdoor Insights: A bill that makes sense from Minnesota regarding sales or transfer of state lands

Sen. Steve Green, R-Fosston, introduced Senate File 5393 last week, which in simple terms would require supermajority approval for certain sales or transfers of surplus state lands. It would require a three-fifths majority vote in each house of the Legislature to transfer properties that don’t comply with the definitions of tax-forfeited properties.

Outdoor Insights: Keep Minnesota’s public land public

On Friday, April 5, some state conservation groups are hosting a 3 p.m. public lands rally at the Minnesota State Capitol. The weatherman calls for a balmy 52 degrees and sun, but a chill wind might just penetrate the building’s corridors, because these days, public lands face threats from across the political spectrum.
In 2024 we have state and federal Democrats feverishly working to assuage their white guilt and right history’s wrongs by transferring public properties – currently open to all races, creeds, and colors – to tribal entities.

Outdoor Insights: A carp barrier in Minnesota, and what are DFL legislators thinking with land transfer bills?

After stagnating for months, the possibility of an Asian carp barrier at Lock and Dam 5 in southeastern Minnesota rose like a phoenix last week.
An upbeat February state budget forecast means more sales tax dollars in Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Fund coffers, and there’s one item on the council’s agenda on Tuesday, March 26: a Mississippi River carp deterrent. The proposal isn’t a lock, but proponents of the new funding mechanism are upbeat.

Outdoor groups plan Public Lands Day at Minnesota Capitol

Several outdoors groups are hosting a Public Lands Day rally at the Minnesota State Capitol rotunda on Friday, April 5 at 3 p.m.
Lukas Leaf, executive director of Sportsmen For the Boundary Waters, said the event will offer an opportunity to advocate for and celebrate public lands, waters, and outdoor traditions.

Some “hard feelings” come with Minnesota DNR changes to record fish program

The Minnesota DNR unveiled its revamped state record fish program, and the changes include relegating pre-1980 records to a new “noncertified” category.
That includes the longstanding state record 17-pound, 8-ounce walleye that Hermantown’s Leroy Chiovitte caught on the Seagull River on the Sunday of fishing opener, May 13, 1979. That fish and 10 others will move to non-certified historical records, so current anglers now have the opportunity to catch and establish new “certified” state records for those 11 species.

Outdoor Insights: Much ado about wild pigs with an updated report released in Minnesota

In my 32 years as an outdoors scribe, I’ve seen a few buzzy topics repeatedly pop up. One is cougars and their imminent re-colonization of the eastern United States.
Thanks in part to trail cameras, that one has gained legitimate ground, at least in Minnesota, and after decades of me rolling my eyes at cougar reports, I wouldn’t be surprised if images of a female puma with kits appeared somewhere in Minnesota one of these days.
The other is feral pigs.

Outdoor Insights: Unprecedented winter weather affecting Minnesota’s fish, wildlife and flora

On Sunday, sap dripped from a maple tree onto my vehicle in my driveway. It’s been a weird couple of weeks, and here are a few ways it’s affecting Minnesota fish, wildlife, and flora.
Outdoors scribe Joe Fellegy’s younger brother, Steve, has been tapping maples on the north side of Mille Lacs near Wealthwood for decades. This year, he tapped trees Jan. 31 – 19 days earlier than his previous earliest tapping record of Feb. 18, 1981.

Backpacking equipment: Gear that will have you ready for trail cruising and autumn hunting

Today’s young, do-it-yourself hunters fill their Instagram profiles with images in the backcountry, decked out in the latest gear.
And for the most part, it’s great gear – far better than the low-quality equipment we had to choose from in the 1980s or early ’90s. Nonetheless, this 50-something outdoorsman sticks with some old stand-bys that have served him well for decades. Everyone wants durability, functionality, and the peace of mind it brings miles from civilization, but don’t skimp on quality. Owning gear that withstands the elements doesn’t have to break the bank anymore.

Outdoor Insights: Interesting observations from the 2024 Minnesota DNR Roundtable

The most interesting session I witnessed at the 2024 Minnesota DNR Roundtable was Technology for Fishing and Hunting, where chatter focused on forward-facing sonar. We learned the DNR has a technology stakeholder workgroup that has met once and will be meeting again. In opening comments, Jeremy Smith from Lindner Media made a case for how the rapid growth of FFS could affect fisheries and the fishing industry at large.
