Minnesota company, Priogen, makes CWD testing more accessible for hunters

“The state agencies have particular goals to help manage the disease. But that may not align with the goals of the hunter – to be able to understand, does the animal have CWD … so they can make an informed decision on whether or not to eat it,” said Peter Larsen, Priogen co-founder and CEO.

Minnesota’s LSOHC approves $165.2M for next round of outdoors projects

The Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council has approved a recommendation for more than 50 projects for a total $165.15 million available via the Legacy Amendment’s Outdoor Heritage Fund.
Each of the projects received partial funding, with none receiving 100% of their original requests – typical of LSOHC-funded projects. This year, the council’s recommendations included several caveats tied to how dollars should be spent after being awarded.

Hunt with close calls ends with a filled tag for Afton man during Minnesota’s opening elk season

With only four tags up for grabs for about 4,000 state elk hunters who applied, Afton resident George Clements, who was successful in the draw, knew it was a special opportunity to hunt the big-game species in Minnesota.
“I didn’t know about elk hunting in Minnesota until about five years ago, and then I started applying,” Clements said.

Minnesota’s bear harvest likely to reach about 2,500 – an average year, DNR says

With fewer than 20 days remaining in the 2025 black bear season (it ends Oct. 12), the Minnesota DNR’s large carnivore specialist, Dan Stark, said that the number harvested will likely top out around 2,500 bears for 2025.
“We’re at about 70% of what the total was for last season, and at this point we’re going to end up around 2,500 bears total this year,” Stark wrote to Outdoor News via email.

Minnesota’s grouse hunt off to a (typically) slow start in ’25, and good opportunities for fall turkeys

The ruffed grouse report after a week-plus of hunting is short and sweet. Since the heat has lingered a bit longer than normal at the start of the grouse season on Sept. 13, there hasn’t been much action, according to Nate Huck, Minnesota DNR migratory gamebird specialist.
“It’s just been so dang hot. … I think things have been pretty slow. I haven’t heard a lot of good reports from anywhere,” Huck said.

Minnesota DNR advisory committee’s report goes ‘live’

The Minnesota DNR’s new Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee’s finalized report gives the DNR and Legislature recommendations on various topics that both entities should consider updating or changing in the future.
The committee offered input on six topics: moose management and recovery, land acquisition and habitat enhancement, wolf management and monitoring, DNR engagement, 4 the Outdoors, and wildlife damage and venison donation. The 16-member committee split into subgroups to dig into the topics the committee outlined as areas that could be revisited with fresh ideas.
