Minnesota commission says no to expedited CWD outreach project in the southeast

On Wednesday, June 11, three projects were presented to the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Natural Resources, all seeking immediate funding from a pool of Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund dollars for “emerging issues.”

Emerging issues involve the types of projects that qualify for ENRTF dollars but have some type of imminent need for funding sooner than the annual process that takes about a year. One such project, presented by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, was related to chronic wasting disease in the southeastern part of the state – specifically newly endemic DPAs 646, 647, and 648.

What hunters, anglers should know as Gov. Walz signs Minnesota’s environment, natural resources budget bills

In case you’ve missed the past few legislative updates, or your eyes glazed over while reading them, here is a final roundup of what shook out on the environment side this legislative session in Minnesota.
One of the bills that the House and Senate passed, and Gov. Tim Walz signed before the end of the regular session was the Legacy bill. Its budget totals around $776.9 million, with 33% allocated to the Clean Water Fund, 33% to the Outdoor Heritage Fund, 19.75% to the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, and 14.25% to the Parks and Trails Fund.

Northwest Angle island resort ownership stays in the family

On Oak Island, a Northwest Angle island on Lake of the Woods on the edge of the Canadian border, two brothers, Garrett and Wyatt Hennum, have taken over the family business at Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge.
With the pair taking over the lodge around this year’s Minnesota fishing opener, it marks the third generation of Hennums to oversee and manage the lodge since 1985.

How a rookie caught her first Minnesota walleye (and the angling bug)

The first half of this year has brought many first experiences for me: eating pickled northern pike, shooting a 12-gauge shotgun, spending a weekend chasing turkeys, and, most recently, catching my first Minnesota walleye.
And the walleyes in Deer Lake on Wednesday, June 11, didn’t make it easy – for me, at least.

Orphaned bear cubs are caught, taken to rehab in Minnesota

When Thief River Falls-area DNR Conservation Officer Bobby Stringer received reports of a dead black bear in a ditch in Minnesota’s Kittson County, it wasn’t known if there were now orphaned cubs that needed to be tracked down.
“Nobody saw the bear cubs initially because the bear cubs weren’t (with the dead sow). And then as the week went by, a person observed two cubs with the (deceased) mother,” Stringer said. Once Stringer learned there were cubs that needed to be caught and perhaps transferred to a rehabilitation center, the clock started ticking to try capture them safely.

Lower-than-expected elk numbers in Minnesota DNR survey prompts decrease in available tags for 2025

After conducting the 2025 elk survey earlier this year, Minnesota DNR officials decided that offering only four elk tags for the state’s hunters was an appropriate number – and a cautious approach – given the winter population survey.
“Lower-than-expected abundance was the primary factor playing into this year’s lower number of permits for state hunters,” said Blane Klemek, the DNR’s northwest region wildlife manager.

Red River’s lake sturgeon in Minnesota show signs of spawning

The Red River’s lake sturgeon restoration effort is seeing fruits of its labor with signs of spawning taking place after decades of work.
Reports of lake sturgeon in the Red River date back to fur-trading days when settlers were still moving west across the landscape.
“Imagine being at a fur fort at the confluence of a tributary with the Red, and you’ve been paddling freight canoes all day, which is not exactly light work, but they had trouble getting to sleep because the sturgeon spawning and leaping was so loud,” said Nick Kludt, the Minnesota DNR’s Red River specialist.

Minnesota DNR doubtful about stocking sturgeon into Lake Minnetonka

Founder of the Westonka Walleye Program, Johnny Range, has spent the past 12 years fundraising and annually stocking 8- to 13-inch walleyes in Lake Minnetonka.
As he plans to continue doing that work, he’s eyed another species for Lake Minnetonka, too – stocking lake sturgeon?
“That’s kind a cool story that I’m working towards – trying to convince the DNR to let me bring these dinosaurs back to the lake,” Range said.

Minnesota DNR’s latest draft of state Wildlife Management Area plan sees movement, again

Two years after DNR Roundtable discussions and some movement on drafting a statewide wildlife and aquatic management area plan, the agency remains somewhat where it was in the fall of 2023.
“Right now, we’re working with leadership to get together with our partners. We’re going to be engaging, again, internally, asking our staff what they want to see of this WMA/AMA system plan,” said Dave Trauba, the Minnesota DNR’s wildlife section manager.
After gathering that input, Trauba said they’ll ask the same of external partners.
