Ohio’s Division of Wildlife hosts open houses for CWD education

To present updated information about the status of the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s (DOW) response to chronic wasting disease (CWD), four open house sessions were held recently in northwest Ohio.
They were advertised through e-mail contacts with hunters from the DSA counties who bought licenses in the past couple of years, local landowners, with post cards, and even using radio ads. A postcard invited people to join the DOW to hear about 2023-2024 harvest and test results, future management plans, and participate in a question-and-answer session.

Ohio Sea Grant funds yellow perch experiment

Yellow perch is currently a hot commodity, with retail prices well above $20 per pound at the fish markets. With wild supplies not sufficient to meet demand, there has been increased efforts in recent years to develop aquaculture techniques for the species.
Yet, traditional aquaculture comes with high operating expenses, water pollution concerns, and parasite and/or disease outbreaks, creating variable production. This makes profitability uncertain, which has limited interest in starting such operations in the Midwest.

NOAA warns that Western Lake Erie algae bloom could be severe this summer

As proof of the wet spring that has prevailed in northwestern Ohio, the all-time precipitation record for April was set this year in Toledo.
As a consequence of the high regional rainfall levels, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science first Western Lake Erie Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) forecast that was released on May 2 is calling for above-average HABs this summer.

Trip to Lake Erie’s Eastern Basin proves worthwhile for jumbo perch

After seeing favorable reports for years about the spring yellow perch runs in Lake Erie’s Eastern Basin, I finally got the chance to go on April 16 to see for myself.
Accompanied by fellow Ohio Outdoor News columnist Jeff Frischkorn, we were hosted by the Chautauqua County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Dave Barus, Chautauqua’s outdoor media promotions associate, does an excellent job of promoting, updating, and sharing local fishing news and opportunities on Lake Erie, its tributary streams, and Lake Chautauqua.

Lake Erie water levels to remain above average

Lake Erie’s record water levels that we saw in 2019 and 2020 will remain as the highest to date in the months of February through September.
The record will also remain from the previous high marks set in October through December 1986 and in January 1987. As many will recall, most of Lake Erie’s water comes from the Upper Great Lakes with Lake Superior setting the tone for how much volume reaches the rest of the system based upon annual precipitation, including snowmelt, from its surrounding landscape.

Ohio State Trappers Association hosts a pair of fur auctions

In what was predicted to be a weak fur market, the Ohio State Trappers Association held a pair of fur auctions this winter instead of the three events that the organization hosted in recent years.
In Bucyrus on Jan. 13, an ice storm limited attendance, yet 1,320 pelts exchanged hands. As expected, beaver was the star of the show.

Great Lakes agencies sign collaboration agreement

The Great Lakes Commission (GLC), made up of leaders from the eight U.S. states and two Canadian provinces on the Great Lakes, has worked since its inception in 1955 to protect the lakes. On March 6, following its semiannual meeting chaired by Mary Mertz, director of the Ohio DNR, the GLC and the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC) and International Joint Commission (IJC) signed the first-ever memorandum of understanding (MOU) between them.

Ohio’s river walleye spawning runs approaching peak

As spring progresses with somewhat cooler temperatures and lower precipitation amounts, the Sandusky and Maumee rivers in Ohio were at near normal levels, but stained, heading into April. Expected rain the first few days of April could raise water levels and prompt more walleyes to advance upstream.
In the Sandusky River, during the second half of March, some limit catches were made in the Walsh/Young parks section and slightly upstream at the cliffs area while the water temperatures ran 43 to 48 degrees.
