Charter captains updated on Lake Erie walleyes, other topics at Ohio Sea Grant hosts 43rd annual conference

With an agenda similar to other years in the 43-year series, the 2024 Ohio Sea Grant Charter Captains Conference gave updates to those in attendance on March 2.
The 2023 Lake Erie fishing summary and 2024 forecast is always highly anticipated, which the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife’s Lake Erie Sandusky Fisheries Research Station Supervisor Eric Weimer provided.

Bite during Ohio’s walleye run fluctuating right now

With the mild winter Ohio is experiencing, there have been fishermen trying their luck for walleyes in the Sandusky and Maumee Rivers since early February. Although some fish were taken early in the low, clear rivers, the spawning runs do not truly develop until mid-March on either of these large Lake Erie tributaries.
Whenever the river temperatures rose, some fish present in both rivers were caught in modest numbers.

Brining and smoking warm-water fish species makes for a delicious treat

By now, there has been plenty of time to amass many packages of fish fillets into the freezer. Between walleyes, white bass, crappies, or various catfish species, there has been many months to get out and fish during pleasant weather.
If not, there is still plenty of time left in the year to gather some “whatever are biting” species of fish and put them to good use.

Highly-anticipated walleye river runs are fast approaching in Ohio

Even as cold evening temperatures maintain skim ice across the surface water, inside quiet marinas and boat ramps remain slick along Lake Erie’s shoreline, and rivers that receive slugs of moving water from warmer upstream rainfall run freely earlier.
In March, the Maumee and Sandusky rivers provide wading and shoreline anglers some of the earliest opportunities each spring for anglers to cast for walleyes.

Deer population concerns rising on Ohio’s South Bass Island in Lake Erie

In 1999, the first white-tailed deer in some time arrived on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. The young doe was so tame that she would approach people and follow vehicles during daylight hours.
When Put-in-Bay, Ohio, Mayor John Blatt held a naming contest, she was dubbed “Millie” – short for Millennium, the milestone event that was on the mind of many that year.

Ohio Sea Grant captain’s conference set for March 2

The Ohio Sea Grant program has offered its charter captain conference for the past 43 years as a way of providing updated information about Lake Erie to licensed guides to enhance the success of their businesses.
The conference will be held this year on March 2 in the Cedar Point Conference Center at Bowling Green State University’s Firelands Campus in Huron.

Tiny window for winter walleyes barely counts as “ice fishing season” on Ohio’s Lake Erie

After more than a week of arctic temperatures blanketed the region in mid-January, portions of Lake Erie quickly got cold enough to freeze, which provided a few days for ice anglers to dust off their hard-water gear and head out.
The first two ice shanties were planted near the “old ramp” off South Bass Island’s west shore on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Understanding larval baits for ice fishing

Available year-round, but most often used in the winter by ice fishermen to tip ice jigs, several small larval insects lead the sales of live bait used during this time of year.
While they all work well at times, some anglers may prefer certain ones over others when seeking perch, bluegills, and other panfish, and the availability of the different forms varies with supply.
