The tried and true shotgun for deer still fits

Many hunters still rely on their shotgun for deer season despite the legality of some rifles in Ohio. No need to change what works, they must surmise. (Photo courtesy John Tertuliani)

Data gathered by the Ohio Division of Wildlife suggested 66% of deer hunters carried shotguns during the 2015 regular gun season. Though not recent data, the number interested me at the time, what with 2015 being the second season for legal straight-walled cartridge firearms for deer.

Before the cartridge regulation change, I had gone back and forth on what to carry for the gun season. From muzzleloaders to the occasional bow and arrow, there has to be a better way, like other hunters, perhaps. I had been thinking it was the gun, not me.
