Hybrid striped bass can be found in many Ohio waters, and certainly earn their hard-fighting reputation

Heterosis (hybrid vigor) means a hybrid striper has more potential than the parents to grow faster, attain a beefier physique, and show a higher tolerance to stress. How much vigor depends on the cards dealt. A good hand plays out well for the hybrid progeny.
A well-endowed fish needs protein, often eating whatever it can find, dead or alive.

Ohio’s hybrid striped bass record falls on Muskingum River

Like many kids, Keith Snider grew up fishing in southeast Ohio. When asked, he claims it is not that serious. But you quickly realize he fishes more than many of us get the chance to. Never did it occur to him he would one day catch the Ohio record hybrid striper.
He just wanted to go fishing. He did and now he’s the official hybrid striped bass record holder for Ohio.

Here are some summertime sunfish lakes to consider in Ohio

My fondest bluegill story came from Milton Trautman. I met him at Stone Laboratory on Lake Erie in 1981. A student and teaching assistant at the time, I was told to pick up Dr. Trautman when he arrived at Put-in-Bay, take him where he wanted to go during the week, and get him what he needed for his stay on Gibraltar Island.
A week, what a treasure for anyone who used The Fishes of Ohio as a class textbook. If a bird flew by, a fish came into view, none missed his notice or scientific naming while we were together.

John Tertuliani: Looking into the incredible history of the venerable bowie knife

History has a way of growing larger than life. The 220-year-old story of Jim Bowie is a mystery to me. Believed to have been born in Logan County, Ky., in 1796, his life ended at the Alamo, fighting for the Texas Revolution.
The discrepancies among the accounts of his life make you wonder about the details of Sept. 19, 1827. One thing is certain, it happened on a Mississippi sandbar rising between Vidalia, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi.

Need a scope for your deer rifle? Hunters may find an advantage in BDC scopes

Should you own a bullet drop compensator (BDC) scope? Maybe, maybe not.
Dialed in, it can be a hunter’s dream, offering the potential for an accurate 200-yard shot with a rifle sighted in at 100. Sounding like a specialized optic, it is a typical scope in terms of the lenses and tube. The difference may not be obvious when you look inside, either. The compensator refers to the mil-dots or hash marks on the reticle, what I have always known as crosshairs.

White bass run in Ohio may come a bit early this year

While the white bass migration in Ohio peaks around mid-May, catchable numbers often linger to the end of the month. The timing and duration of the spawn is governed by the weather. No guarantee predicting exactly when.
Temperatures cold enough to interrupt spawning have been less prevalent in recent years. In early 2024, record setting warm temperatures made it look like spawning may begin earlier and end sooner than usual. It proved just the beginning of a rollercoaster and now only time will tell.

Understand suitable habitat for spawning sauger

Warmer temperatures jumpstarted the 2024 sauger and walleye migration in Ohio, turning the engine over in early February. The catching got more serious in March. Anglers started finding the numbers – the tantalizing numbers they expected from a pre-spawn pot of gold.
Those numbers occur more predictably below an obstruction such as a dam. This is not the only place for sauger to gather, but a good one.

John Tertuliani: Tips to finding Ohio crappies after ice-out

I may someday reach it if there is such a thing as the Zen of crappie fishing. Will I live long enough to grasp the described level of calm attentiveness? Or is it the enlightenment I am really after?
For now, I accept the intuition of my actions leading to ice-out crappies. This is challenge enough at my level of modern technology.
