Minnesota’s highly-watched bald eagle chick dies after nest falls from tree

The Minnesota DNR announced on the morning of April 2 that the bald eagle nest that the DNR’s EagleCam is monitoring had fallen out of its tree early on Sunday morning.
The DNR updated the post later in the morning with the message that staff had found the bald eagle chick that had hatched on March 26. The chick did not survive the fall.

Fawn study providing much-needed deer data in Minnesota’s farmland region

There are many areas of Minnesota where deer managers don’t have updated data in terms of fawn survival rates, but a study being conducted in the south-central area of the state is changing that in a portion of the farmland region.
Wildlife researchers with the Minnesota DNR have completed two years of field work in a three-year fawn study that encompasses parts of deer permit areas 252, 253, 296, and 299.

Spring scout for whitetails and reap the benefits in the fall

It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about does or bucks, the majority of the deer I put a bow tag on stem in some way from scouting. Ahead of spring green-up, the forest floor is an open book giving away a whitetail’s secrets. Trails and rut sign from the prior fall jump off the page. Here are a few of the things I focus on when in the woods this time of year.

Opposition among some Iowa deer hunters to non-resident deer-tag legislation

Hunters consistently have proven they are willing to pay huge costs as non-residents to hunt whitetails in Iowa. Now an Iowa bill introduced earlier this year would add 1,500 non-resident any-deer licenses each season. That would increase the number of any-deer licenses a year available to non-resident hunters to 7,500, not more than 35% of which could be bow licenses.

Winter severity starting to concern northern Minnesota deer managers

By most accounts, northern Minnesota deer needed a break this year from another harsh winter. But that hasn’t been the case, as there are areas where the level of concern is again rising regarding the season’s effects on the herd – just as another winter storm struck the state this week.

How much technology is too much in outdoor pursuits?

Technology is likely here to stay for good in many situations when it comes to how users are taking part in the outdoors. This is welcomed by some, while others view certain aspects of it going too far as it pertains to things such as fair chase. The recently-held Minnesota DNR Roundtable featured a wide-ranging discussion looking at the pros and cons many see with the tools at our fingertips.
