Dozens of abandoned and orphaned oil and gas wells in the Allegheny National Forest have been earmarked for plugging, remediation and reclamation this year through a federal bipartisan initiative administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Pennsylvania will receive funding to cap 37 wells in the forest – known as the ANF – as part of a multi-year $250 million program launched in 2022 to clean up thousands of defunct sites on federal public lands in 24 states.
