UTV Buyers’ Guide: What do updated lineups in the quad market look like for 2025?

Following nine consecutive years of steady growth, the power sports industry scored the all-time record in 2020, when government-mandated isolation boosted demand for off-road vehicles hit 0.7 million sales for the first time ever, and machines were sometimes difficult to find.
In succeeding years sales have continued to be strong, dealers have built up inventories, and if you’re in the market for a new machine, you should find an excellent selection of new ATVs and UTVs this fall.

Here’s how to outfit an AR-15 for deer hunting

The AR-15 has earned the title of America’s Modern Sporting Rifle by becoming – far and away – the most popular long gun in the United States today.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation estimates there were more than 24.4 million AR-15s in use by civilians as of 2022. The rifle is ideal for competitive target shooting, home defense, recreational target shooting and numerous hunting applications. AR-15s have long been favored by varmint and predator hunters. And with the proper ammunition, they are also well-suited for hunting white-tailed deer in much of the eastern U.S. and even points farther west.

The Kentucky long rifle: America’s first contribution to firearm engineering

The use and development of firearms has been vital to the survival and prosperity of our nation since the first permanent English colony was established more than 400 years ago in what is now Virginia. These settlers brought with them the best available firearms, which they knew would be needed to defend the colony and provide food from the new world’s wild game.
Those early smoothbore matchlocks and wheellocks were replaced during the following decades by guns with rifling developed in Germany and Switzerland, and the flintlock mechanism that was developed in France, which contains the trigger, sear, mainspring and frizzen.

Better shooting accuracy: Time to consider a tripod?

It was the opening day of my spring turkey hunt. There had been sporadic gobbling from the ridge 200 yards southwest of my tent blind, which was set up beneath the branches of an old white pine.
About 7:15 a.m. the gobbling began moving closer. The tom kept coming with a few soft yelps of encouragement from a diaphragm call. I gave a quick glance at the hen and jake decoys about 20 yards east of the blind, then returned my focus to the source of the gobbling. As I settled the crosshairs of my 2.5X scope on the bird’s neck, I felt confident of the shot because the forend of my 12-gauge rested securely in the yoke of my Vanguard tripod.

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany offers update on wolf delisting bill

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, who represents citizens in an area of northern Wisconsin containing the state’s largest wolf population, briefly attended a Sept. 23 Conservation Congress Wolf Committee meeting with an update on legislation that would remove wolves from federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.
The “Trust the Science Act”, HR-764, re-introduced by Tiffany and Rep. Lauren Boebert, (R-Colorado) cleared the House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources 21-16, and is supported by rest of Wisconsin’s Republican House delegation. According to Tiffany, the legislation is based on a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) 2020 decision that, after extensive study, wolves in the Upper Great Lakes should be delisted.

Wisconsin Conservation Congress committee rejects DNR’s wolf plan draft

Conservation Congress Wolf Committee members had opposed the original draft of a DNR updated wolf plan that was released in November 2022, and now moved up its 2023 fall meeting to review a revised wolf plan (released Aug. 1) prior to it being presented to the Natural Resources Board (NRB) on Oct. 25 in Madison.
The committee, chaired by Ed Harvey, Jr., met Sept. 23 at the Marathon County Library, with 13 members attending in person and five via a virtual option.
