Future of Long Island’s Stump Pond faces litigation

What was once a popular paddling and bass fishing spot at Long Island’s Blydenburgh County Park is now a marshy mudflat following a 2024 spillway breach. On July 13, six environmental organizations filed a lawsuit against the Suffolk County Legislature in New York, challenging its decision to replace a storm-damaged dam spillway at Blydenburgh County Park, and recreate a recreational pond that drained when the spillway collapsed.
On the night of Aug. 18-19, 2024, 9 inches of rain fell on parts of Long Island, causing massive flooding on the Nissequogue River which washed out two aging dams, including the dam that created Stump Pond, a popular fishing and paddling venue in Blydenburgh County Park.
